Date: June 14, 1996

Victim
Aarnie Raymond SAIKKONEN
23/M

Aarnie was a student and was employeed as a bouncer at a roadhouse.

Details of Investigation:

The following are the circumstances surrounding the death of Aarnie SAIKKONEN and the subsequent investigation by the Homicide Squad.

On June 14th, 1996 at approximately 3:20 a.m. there was a 9-1-1 call placed to Police reporting an armed robbery in progress at 1635 Lawrence Avenue West, the O’Toole’s Roadhouse.

O’Toole’s is a licensed establishment located in the Black Creek Mews Plaza at Lawrence Avenue West and Black Creek Drive. The premise was closed for business at 2:00 a.m. The employees remained to clean up, count cash and close.

The Officers were directed to the south west area of the plaza. Once at this location they observed Aarnie SAIKKONEN in the arms of a male who was attempting to administer first aid.

Aarnie was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations to date have revealed the now deceased was employed as a bouncer at O’Toole’s. He booked off work at 3:05 a.m. and left the premise. When he got to the parking lot he observed four persons who appeared suspicious. He returned to O’Toole’s telling the owner of his concerns.

When Aarnie left O’Toole’s a second time, he was confronted by two armed males. At the same time another two armed males were forcing a female and male at gun point to the front door of O’Toole’s. Once there, the suspects stood away from the front window ordering the patrons to knock and have someone open the door.

The cleaner came, recognized the patrons and opened the door. The cleaner quickly realized there was a problem and tried to hold the door closed. The suspects pulled on the door forcing their way into the premise.

Once inside the foyer of O’Toole’s, one suspect fired his weapon into the wall, ordering everyone to lie on the floor. All three complied and the suspects moved inside the bar.

The cleaner ran to the bar and hit the silent alarm, then ran out the back door.

A waitress came from the rear of the premise to see what the commotion was about. One suspect fired his weapon in her direction. She fled out the rear door. One employee remained in the office locking the door.

One suspect attempted to kick in the door to the office. He demanded money. The employee refused to open the door and called 9-1-1. The suspect, frustrated, fled the scene.

The cleaner made his way to the front of O’Toole’s where he observed Aarnie SAIKKONEN standing near two male suspects. The cleaner called to Aarnie advising him that these suspects were involved in the robbery.

The two male suspects then fled, running southbound through the parking lot. Aarnie and the cleaner gave chase.

Aarnie caught one of the suspects at the south west side of the plaza. A struggle ensued during which Aarnie SAIKKONEN was shot.

The suspects continued their flight south then east in a ravine at the rear of the plaza.

Police Dog Services attended and conducted a search from the scene east to Amesbury Park where the scent was lost.

Several witnesses were interviewed and the following descriptions were compiled.

1. Male, black, early 20’s, 6’2”, slim build, shaved head
blue baggy top and pants, blue bandanna

2, 3, 4. Male, black, early 20’s, 5’8”, stocky muscular build,
one wearing black baseball cap with white stripe.

All 4 suspects were armed with handguns.

Do you have any links to articles regarding this case? There seems to be no location mentioned. Was this Ontario?

Off the top of my head, this sounds like more than a simple robbery. Sounds gang or biker related. Jmo.
