Active shooter in Charleston

I was in a bus going down King Street when right afterwards. I was just crossing Calhoun in the bus and the police came in front of us. I was meeting family and had no idea what was going on until I saw the helicopters outside the restaurant where we were at. This was about 2 hours ago and I am just now able to check in here to see what is going on. Local news it's all over local news they say it's a disgruntled employee but I guess you guys already know that. The photograph is when I just took a few minutes ago on Calhoun and Meeting Street they are still blocking off the side streets.

Locking schools down has nothing to do with the wellbeing of the kids. It's done to give the parents the illusion their kids are safe. The reality is, if the gunman wants to, he can go to the locked down school, shoot out the windows, climb in and start killing kids, and there is very little the police can do to stop him. Locking schools down just puts the kids in more danger, by trapping them there. But it does give the parents a false sense of security, and that is what the goal is.

One dead, suspect shot by police following hostage situation at downtown Charleston restaurant

Bill Rosene and his wife, Tia, of Mount Pleasant sat near the front of the restaurant, eating cornbread, when the gunman walked into the main dining room.

"He came through the back door and said, 'Everyone get on the floor! Get on the floor!'" according to Rosene.

Rosene said the man walked down the aisle by him. “I looked at his side, and that’s when I saw the gun.”

He said everyone in the restaurant scrambled to get on the floor. “Then he said something like, ‘There’s a new boss in town.’”

He and his wife said no one was screaming. “But everyone was kind of frantic,” Tia said.

Suddenly, the gunman changed his mind and said. “No, everyone go to the back,” Rosene said.

“Then everyone just ran out the door.”

“I heard that a dishwasher got fired and came back in and shot the chef," said Aquino. "There were some people in there and there were a couple of hostages."

Peter Siegert, 73, and his son Peter Siegert IV, 45, both of Maryland, were eating at Virginia's when two waitresses and three kitchen staff members marched through the restaurant and out the front door without saying anything.

An older black man wearing an apron and dressed like a kitchen staff member walked from the back of the restaurant holding a small caliber revolver. He locked the door and said “I am the new king of Charleston.”

He told everyone in the restaurant to get down and move to the back of the building. There were about 30 people dining at the time.

They herded to the back where there were two side exit doors. They began filtering out, some crawling on all fours.

Looking back, I apparently was going by the restaurant (I had just boarded a bus at Charleston Area Convention and Visitor's Bureau as it was "going down") and then the police that I saw on the bus were positioning to block off the streets.

It's so surreal how it was handled that I was in the midst of it, and then had lunch near there and had no idea until I saw the helicopters, a friend who knew I was in the historic district for lunch texted me.

Again, looking back, the one take away I have for situations like this is that the police block off the perimeter immediately for a few blocks. Guess just a :websleuther: kinda viewpoint iykwimn. Police presence all over, but low key.

Not anxious over it, no. During lunch, I was texted by a friend who knew where I was, and had heard about it and texted me. I was meeting folks for lunch, so wasn't seeing the news at all. During lunch, I was sitting by the window with helicopters above, knowing what was going on but I was not anxious, as I knew I was outside the perimeter and my friend kept me up to date. I did NOT tell my lunchmates anything at the time as I didn't want THEM to be anxious! When we left about 1:30, I had to tell them what was going on as I knew we needed to avoid that area, and our next stop was an historic house next to the Charleston museum area which was two blocks away from where this was happening.

We left lunch, and traveled up to that area, and the historical house was locked. We had to knock and they had to open the locked door for our tour. Later, we found out that they were on "lock down", but the docents never even mentioned that to us during the tour.

Perhaps I need to let a little "anxious" out by posting this here?
