Afghans arrange marriages for toddler brides

  • #21
It seems pretty stupid and deliberate to me when you see doctors and pharmaceutical companies raking in the cash and gouging everyone for needed drugs and health care. That's all I'm saying.

I don't mean to sound cold, but that's been their culture for thousands of years. The US has things they need to take care of HERE in this country before playing world police for other countries, especially ones that don't want our help or interference.

Who is talking about the US policing this? We are responding to a news link.

And discussing how some arranged marriages work out just fine, but sometimes it is used to control and subjugate women. I don't understand how it got to be a US healthcare policy debate.

I'm not debating anything. And kgeaux brought up healthcare.

I'm talking about the US policing this.

It can't get any more simple than that.

Edit: Really, I just don't understand the reasoning behind writing this article other than to rile up the American public. What exactly is anyone going to do about this?

Thanks for the link to the political pavilion. I'll make sure to visit it at never-thirty.

We have people here in the US who are denied adequate medical care.

You are kidding, right? Not being able to afford medical care in a republic is VASTLY different from having to point to a spot on a little doll because you cannot show your body to a medical doctor.

Your example has to do with the type of government we have, which is not socialist, and the wealth or lack thereof of the patient. My example has to do with a culture who routinely denies basic rights to only one sex of its citizens.

So basically what you're saying is that we should pay for everyone to receive health care with our tax dollars???? Is that what you're honestly trying to say?

The only reason we've come so far in our medical advances is because the drug companies pay for the research that allows us to do so. If you take away their profits, you take away that research. This is a free economic nation. Personally, if people want to donate to private organizations that help pay for healthcare, that's one thing. Saying that the government should automatically step in there and use MY tax dollars is ridiculous.

Don't blame me because you want to interject politics into a discussion about a culture shaped by intolerant, oppresive beliefs about women!

USA is NOT policing this. It IS being 'policed' by Afghani Women's rights agencies, who have recognized that arranged marriages are but one symptom of the general lack of rights their women 'enjoy.' Page 2 of the article highlights a situation a 22 year old young woman finds herself in. Her dad died, and a friend of his TOOK IT UPON HIMSELF to 'step in' and arrange a marriage for her. She now finds herself engaged to.....surprise, the man's son. She has fought and fought to be released from that engagement and cannot be released. And this is an engagement arranged by a NONfamily member-----a nonfamily member NO ONE ASKED to step in and 'help out.' We are discussing way more than the fact that women can't even show their shameful nasty little bodies to their own physicians....we are discussing a culture which allows THIS to happen.

Our government had nothing to do with the article, BTW, which was printed by a news organization. This article was ONE which featured Afganistan. Since we have troops in Afghanistan, people DO want to know what's going on over there.

Don't put words in my mouth.

I didn't say anything about using yours or anyone else's tax dollars. Calm down.

You must live in a pretty terrific fantasy world if you think the money it costs to do medical research even begins to scratch the surface of their profit margin.

And this is getting off topic.

Kgeaux, I didn't "blame" you for anything. You mentioned healthcare in Afghanistan, did you not?

And you're right, USA is not policing this, and that isn't what I meant to say. It's policed by people who sit on the internet all day with nothing better to do than 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 about things that are beyond their control.

I didn't know it was a crime to have an opinion on things here in this forum without pissing people off so easily.

Okay, I won't put words in your mouth. How about you explain to all of us what it is that you're trying to say?????

Yeah, that's what I thought you meant.

And, if you can't stand the heat, don't post about stuff you can't defend.

LOL, that's the assessment you come up with? Whatever Jeana. If you can't comprehend what I read the first time that's your problem, not mine. I don't have all evening to spell out everything, and being agressive with your rebuttals isn't what I consider "heat". Goodnight.

And this poor baby, engaged to her first cousin.....a 'gift' from her daddy to his sister! Dear, dear God.

The president of Iran stood before the UN and gave a speech mourning how women are disrespected in western cultures....we don't love and respect, cherish our women, like they do in Iran and other Islamic cultures. We don't have good "family values" like they do.

Guess we're mighty ignorant over here. Shoot, we're so fricking stupid that we don't marry off our babies, stone our 16 year old daughters who've been raped, burn our wives alive when we tire of them, etc. We really SHOULD learn to "respect" our women like those Islamic cultures do, shouldn't we?

Boy, there really are miracles! I never thought there'd be a day when you & I would agree on anything! I need a high-5 smilie.

Sorry Paladin. You took a thread about Afghan toddlers being married away and hijacked it for your own agenda, but I'm the one who needs you to "spell out" what you mean??????
