By 1938, pediatrician Ingeborg Syllm-Rapoport had completed her thesis on diptheria at the University of Hamburg-Deppendorf in Germany and was working at the Israelite hospital there.
As a Jew in Germany during WW2 though, she was forbidden to collect her doctorate. She survived the Holocaust and sought refuge in the US. Later, she returned to the DDR ( then Communist East Germany).
Now, finally, in a reunited Germany, Ingeborg has been awarded her PhD by the university. She is 102 years old. Authorities say she will receive her certificate June 9.
