After Newtown, new threats of gun violence surfacing

People shouldn't expect teachers to do the parents job. When I was student teaching we sent out report cards. The kids had to get them signed by their parents and returned. There was a place for the parents to put comments. A few of them came back saying something to the effect of; "Why aren't you making sure he/she is getting their homework done?" :banghead:

But you believe "it takes a village".

When I was younger and video games were much less advanced I played a lot. I haven't become desensitized to violence, because my father instilled in me a sense of right and wrong. Sometimes it's fun to play the bad guy. I played cops and robbers when I was a child.

When I was younger, kids didn't bring guns to school.

We received a recorded message from the Superintendent of the school district on Monday evening that an 18 yr old was arrested for comments he made in support of the shooting in CT.

FAIRFIELD, CA - A Suisun City 18 year old was taken into custody for allegedly posting online threats similar to Friday's Connecticut school shooting, said police.
Det. Sgt. Kevin Carella said the police department was made aware of the comments Monday morning. Carella said a friend of a friend saw Facebook posts allegedly made by suspect Sergio Cabada and informed police.
The Facebook posts indicated Cabada supported the alleged actions of the school shooter and was thinking about carrying out a similar shooting rampage, according to Carella.
Detectives obtained a warrant to search Cabada's home and found he had access to firearms, Carella said.
Cabada was arrested Monday afternoon and booked on suspicion of making criminal threats, which are felonies. He posted $15,000 bail and was released.

Except that the parent is vastly outnumbered by the various media outlets a kid is inundated with. Perhaps you'd like to try to answer the question? "Where have we gone so wrong with our youth"?
I've given my opinion, lets hear yours.

Personally, I think reality shows that show people behaving like :censored: don't help. Still I think the parent needs to communicate as much as possible with the kids. You're the biggest influence in their lives. JMO

I have a friend who became a teacher. She teaches in High School. A student turned in a plagiarized paper for an assignment. She found the paper online, and so she gave him an F. The kid's mother came in to talk to the teacher and the principal. She started screaming at my friend telling her that she's ruining "Johnny's" chances of getting into Harvard and a lot of other BS stuff. My friend is not like me, I don't put up with a lot of BS.

I would have let the parent go off and then asked calmly if she was done. Then I would have calmly told her that the paper was plagiarized and that's why the kid got an F. I would have had a laptop computer with the page he plagiarized from loaded up. I'm sure the parent would insist that the paper wasn't plagiarized. I would hand her Johnny's paper and then tell her to read along with me. I would start reading the online paper and allow her to see that word for word it was the same paper.

If she still got mad, I'd tell her that if she wanted to teach lying is an ok attribute to have she could, but in my classroom I refuse to do that.

What did your friend do?

(I, too, had a "download your paper from the internet" problem while teaching at a university. Broke my heart. And those were just the cases I caught. I had no say in the penalties (the university chancellor handled that, for legal reasons), but one of the three kids had the guts to come back two years later and ask to repeat the course. I was very impressed and told him to come to me instead of the internet if he ran into problems. He did well.)

I ran into her at a store and we both didn't have a lot of time so I never found out.

Wow! What a read here! A couple things I want to comment on (if I may :blushing:)

I think what everyone is arguing here is semantics. It's not 'ethics' or 'religion', it is 'ethos'. ( "character" that is used to describe the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community) [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethos"]Ethos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

The 'ethos' of my area in rural Ohio is VERY different from the 'ethos' of inner-city Cleveland for example. People are starting to make broad statements here, where the diversity AND unity of the USof A is what makes us unique.

The 'ethos' of the US is based on the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution (and a whole bunch of other historical documents that I have in a pretty blue book :floorlaugh: ). Technically, everything here (in the US) should fit within that framework. It doesn't always work that way. (For example, inner-city gangs have their own ethos which may be different than their own neighbors.)

My rule in my home is this: Don't hurt yourself, don't hurt others and don't hurt things. That about covers it. Does everyone follow those rules all the time? No way - but is a noble goal. (BTW - I have one child who was BORN sassing me and hasn't stopped for over 20 years!)

I guess my point is, the village thing. Watch out for yourself and watch out for others. I do believe that most of the 'successful' school assaults were perfected in isolation. If people have close relationships within their community, they are less likely to try to harm it.
