GUILTY AK - Ashley Johnson-Barr, 10, Kotzebue, 6 Sep 2018 *Arrest*

  • #101

Jessica Ridgeway was 10 years old (her abduction brought both pink and me to WS).

May Ashley’s outcome be much different here.

Could she have been taken to a boat?

Family say Kotzebue girl's disappearance less clear as search priorities shift

There's a video at the link where Chris Klint reports from Rainbow Park.
Reading this article, raises some questions for sure. Did she go home after school? The father talked about conflicting stories about which park she was at and another girl. Now, if she was with another girl- they were both obviously seen together. So, no one can describe to the police who the other girl was, and no one knows her name, I take it? Kids in a town that small usually know just about every other kid- maybe they don't hang around with one another, but you know them from school or the neighborhood. We live in a small town and knew almost all of the kids first names, and we are parents. Yet no one has given the name of the girl she was last seen with, and that girl hasn't come forward on her own to her parents, teacher, police?

This last paragraph is disheartening.

Family say Kotzebue girl's disappearance less clear as search priorities shift

Shannon Kimball, director at large with the Alaska Search and Rescue Association, announced to the gathering of volunteers around 9:00 p.m. [on Tuesday, 9/11] that all the investigation from the search and rescue effort had been completed. She said that crews had searched 80-99 percent of the areas that needed to be searched, and that it would take new information for search efforts to continue Wednesday. Volunteer crews will meet again at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday to decide if or when a search and rescue operation will resume.

She is 10 years old. Why would she be allowed to go to the park in the evening (bath, homework, getting ready for bed etc) and not close to the home. My son is 16 (very small for his age and he isn't allowed to go anywhere without me around. Any facebook pages for Ashley or her parents or other social media (instagram, which I found out from my son that alot of teens will instagram if they don't have a phone due to using a tablet vs a phone)

Opps disregard the part about her parents and social media. I found them anyways on facebook. Praying there are some leads to bring Ashley home :(

(NANA building in Kotzebue. Sept. 10, 2018.)

"The police department discovered that Ashley's cell telephone was located in the street by the NANA building, (100 Second Avenue) which is approximately half a mile from the park and in (the) opposite direction of her residence."

Johnson-Barr had last been reported traveling east on Lagoon Street toward 5th Street. She was wearing "a pink sweater and jeans."

Kotzebue search under way for missing girl, 10
I have just started and am catching up, but this phone thing alone sounds very disturbing.

Reporter Heather Hintz tweeted about the search efforts on Sept. 10 (the tweet was quoted upthread). She included photos with the tweet, including this photo of a house map of Kotzebue with highlighted and lettered grids (assume these are search grids). The attached file is the downloaded map image, which is low-res. I haven't run any filters on it.

I believe the red tag furthest to the left is Rainbow Park. The red tag on the right should be June Nelson Elementary School, which is Ashley's school. These might signify confirmed sightings as of Sept. 10.

The orange tags are the lettered grids (W is in the phonetic alphabet). I am not yet certain what the yellow tags signify.

I think Ashley's phone was found in the vicinity of where grids G-B-F-D join together.

Ugh, I'm starting to feel the slow slide into the dark abyss.

The new info for me was learning that her cell phone continued to work. Not sure what to make of it yet but now it doesn't sound like someone was trying to trash it.

This is so strange. The whole thing. I am pretty confused at all of this. I just hope there's a resolution soon. I have a 10 year old. Gut-wrenching.

I'm having a hard time grasping what is going on here. This is scary. Poor little...where are you?

Could she have been taken to a boat?

Seeing how close the planes were to where the phone was found, I had wondered if she could have been taken out by plane?

May a Higher power give her and her family strength. She needs to be home!

I was wondering the same. I don’t know how security works with someone who flies their own private plane. Regardless, wouldn’t there be security cameras somewhere?

Imo since it’s such a small town with everyone knowing everyone, I wouldn’t think that if someone abducted her they would have time to destroy the phone. Imo wiping it down quickly would take less time than to disable or destroy it.

My goodness, if children aren’t safe on an isolated island with no roads leading out, where are they safe? I’m so sad to read about this case. I hope against hope that this little girl is found — safe & sound.

MOO, outlining scenarios:

Accidental death via drowning or fall or other.

Animal attack - dog, wild animal, etc.

Wandered off or lost maybe headed towards a village or the outlying wilderness

Abduction by a known person - more common than a stranger. Close knit community, supportive, small area but still possible

Abduction by a stranger - statistically less common. Area is high traffic for boats and planes, sometimes with strangers

Runaway - she’s very young for this scenario but still possible. Opportunities to stow away on boats and planes.

Assumptions:

CCTV at high security/traffic locations. This is an alcohol “damp” village (restricted alcohol but not dry). There will be entry and exit security for the cargo, etc.

Witnesses - how many and where?

Habits - is she shy? Adventurous? Is she the type of child that would go pick berries to surprise her mom? Would she wander? She has a curfew per the MSM via the dad - so they have established boundaries.

Friends - would they lie for her? Is she popular? Bullied?

She has a phone - is there social media on it? FBI would have examined data.

These are my own thoughts but please weigh-in on scenarios. I generally believe in Occam’s Razor. So if I follow that, accident invloves the least amount of assumptions.

Two more FBI agents are in Kotzebue to join in search for 10yo Ashley Johnson-Barr, missing since Thursday. Total of 17 FBI, 10 troopers, 3 KPD. Another dog team is on the way. Search area expanded to coastline of Kotzebue Sound, Swan Lake and Lagoon.
Heather Hintze on Twitter

I can't believe Ashley hasn't been found. I'm also surprised at the turnout of FBI agents. I'm starting to wonder if local LE has information they're not sharing that points to foul play even though they are still calling it a rescue mission.

Seaplanes are everywhere in Alaska!
