Villages and cities across Alaska pay tributes to a missing 10 year-old girl from Kotzebue

Across the state, from Kotzebue to Anchorage, Utqiagvik to Shishmaref, hundreds of people marched, prayed, wore purple and sang to honor a missing 10-year-old girl.

Facebook profiles have changed across the state to show families wearing purple or purple hearts to honor Ashley.

Jonathon Taylor, spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety, says he expects to have an update on the search for Ashley by 3 o'clock in the afternoon on Friday.

Focus shifts in search for missing 10-year-old

Alaska State Troopers say search efforts for Ashley Johnson-Barr are shifting more toward investigation and analysis, including of a cellphone -- the only evidence that's been found so far.

Currently, there are 17 FBI special agents, ten Alaska State Troopers and three dog teams working with the Kotzebue Police Department, under the leadership of AST. Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are also assisting efforts.

I wish we had some sense of her routine. Her father said her curfew is 8:30 pm — where does she usually eat dinner? Does she go home after school or somewhere else? Ashley’s sister was with her father in the video interview and the poor girl looked ready to burst into tears.

Her body has been recovered today. They aren't releasing much else but expect they will very soon after state conducts its autopsy. Very sad ending for my state and especially her loved ones. Lets hope answers are soon. Our law enforcement and searchers did an amazing job on this case so far.

“After eight days, the search for Ashley has come to an unfortunate end. Late this afternoon, Ashley was located deceased by law enforcement and volunteer canvas teams in an area east of the City of Kotzebue. Alaska State Troopers, the FBI, Kotzebue Police Department, and the Northwest Arctic Borough extend our sincerest condolences to Ashley’s family, friends, and community. “Investigation remains ongoing. No additional information is available at this time; further updates will be provided as more details are available.”

This is a heartbreaking outcome.

This MSM article says they found her East of the city of Kotzebue. East of the city appears to be mostly water on the map IMO.

So heartbreaking, another sweet innocent child taken far too soon

This wasn't surprising unfortunately since its been a week and they had 17 FBI agents fly in, they must have had something to suggest foul play right away. I hope we'll hear of an arrest soon.

In a town this small somebody had to have seen something. I keep going back to the amount of sex offenders in this tiny village, right from the beginning that really stood out.

Johnson-Barr's father, Walter "Scotty" Barr said in a text message earlier Friday that his daughter was a "very happy person" who "always had a smile no matter what."

Ashley liked playing basketball and went to church every week, Barr wrote. She loved to use her allowance to buy things for her friends, he said. She loved her niece and was "willing to do anything for her."

Troopers said the investigation continues. "No additional information is available at this time; further updates will be provided as more details are available," troopers said.


Trooper spokesman Jonathon Taylor said no arrests had been made as of Friday evening.

There’s always a chance she went off on a distracted jaunt and met with a tragic accident.

We really don’t believe that, though, do we?

I fear if she was in the water they may have more difficulty determining time of death and how long she was in the water.

I really really hope LE can recover relevant info from her phone.
