Allegedly told investigators he didn’t know Ashley Johnson-Barr, didn’t see her name on the home screen of the cell phone he told investigators he found in the street, and didn’t use a four-wheeler the day of her disappearance. Investigators found evidence they say refutes all those claims as they searched for the girl, who was found dead more than a quarter mile off a road.
9/21/18: Arraignment hearing: Plead not guilty. The maximum penalty for making false statements could be five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Trial on 11/19/19.

Man accused of killing 10-year-old Kotzebue girl appears in Fairbanks court

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Peter Wilson, the Kotzebue man charged with the death of 10-year-old Ashley Johnson-Barr, appeared telephonically today in Fairbanks Court. At the representation hearing, Wilson's defense attorney said they do not have enough information at this time to determine if they can continue to represent him. The attorney for the Office of Special Prosecutions countered saying it is taking a while to get all the information processed.

Report cites weak reporting on missing, killed Native women (with clip)

"Numerous police departments nationwide are not adequately identifying or reporting cases of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls as concerns mount over the level of violence they often face, according to a study released by a Native American nonprofit Wednesday.

The report from the Seattle-based Urban Indian Health Institute, the research arm of the Seattle Indian Health Board, was conducted over the past year amid worry in tribal communities and cities that Native American and Alaska Native women are vanishing in high numbers, despite a lack of available government data to identify the full scope of the problem.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski joined other lawmakers and representatives of the Urban Indian Health Institute to review the report's findings Wednesday in Washington. Its release comes as multiple bills at the state and federal level have been proposed to address the issue and improve data collection....

Murkowski also paused to acknowledge Kotzebue, in the Northwest Arctic Borough, where missing 10-year-old Ashley Johnson-Barr was kidnapped, raped and killed earlier this year. Her accused murderer, Peter Wilson, was held in September on $3 million bail...."

Monday, Nov. 19th:

The charge filed against Wilson centers on accusations that he lied to law enforcement, particularly in regards to Johnson-Barr's cell phone, which is said to have led authorities to her body Friday evening. Plead not guilty.
Federal charging documents have been filed Monday afternoon against a man related to the death of Ashley Johnson-Barr in a case officials say appears to be murder. A sworn affidavit by the FBI reports that investigators used geo-location data from Johnson-Barr's phone to discover that on the day of her disappearance, it had traveled roughly two miles east of downtown Kotzebue. A warrant has now been obtained to collect DNA & trace evidence samples from Wilson, and officials say Johnson-Barr's death appears to be a murder, although the cause of death is still being investigated.
9/18/18 Update: First court appearance. Was appointed a Public Defender. Allegedly told investigators he didn’t know Ashley Johnson-Barr, didn’t see her name on the home screen of the cell phone he told investigators he found in the street, and didn’t use a four-wheeler the day of her disappearance. 9/20/18: A grand jury returned an indictment against Wilson. Wilson will be arraigned Friday (9/21). If not, he would return to court Sept. 27. Wilson will be kept in jail. Next arraignment hearing 9/21.
9/21/18: Arraignment hearing: Plead not guilty. The maximum penalty for making false statements could be five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
9/24/18 Update: The Office of Special Prosecutions on Monday (9/24/18) filed new state charges against Wilson. Charges include 3 counts of murder in the 1st degree, 1 count of kidnapping, 4 counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the 1st degree & tampering with evidence. Wilson faces up to 99 years in prison. Prelim hearing 10/4. 11/7/18: Omnibus hearing on 12/13 for murder charges.

Trial date delayed for man charged with murder of 10-year-old Kotzebue girl


ANCHORAGE (KTUU) — A state trial date for Peter Wilson, the man accused in the kidnapping, rape and murder of a young girl from Kotzebue was delayed Wednesday.

Wilson, who is accused of taking the life of 10-year-old Ashley Johnson-Barr, was scheduled to go to trial at the end of December.

But piles of police reports, and a potential conflict with the Public Defender Agency have slowed things down.

The new trial date is set for late March 2019.

Prosecutors say Wilson's case is complex with a large amount of evidence.
