Found Alive AK - Cynthia Hovsepian, 37, & Jonas Bare, 50, visiting from TN, didn't check out of Airbnb, car found, Fairbanks, 11 Aug 2023

I just saw an article on this dated today a few minutes ago. In the article they were still missing. I came here and discovered they have been found. This is a very weird case imo.

'I'm Cynthia's sister and am over the moon they made it out safe. 'I'm not going into a lot of detail ...'They are not experienced hikers and this could have happened to anyone really...' she added.

Didn't she or someone else close to them just say he was so experienced that he could live off the grid for an extended time if he had to or wanted to?

The Tennessee couple found alive after eight days in the Alaska wilderness have a complicated and chaotic history, according to the woman’s sister and social media posts.

[snip]

But Sabine Milby, who said on Facebook that she is Hovsepian’s sister, said Cynthia had a history of serious drug abuse — which left her with an overdose-induced stroke that affected her eyesight — and that she and Bare now have a good relationship.

[snip]

She now lives with Jonas as a roommate and he makes sure that she is well taken care of. They decided on a long overdue vacation to Alaska which they both were excited about. There is NO foul play involved.”

How Bare and Hovsepian — who is visually impaired and occasionally relies on a cane — survived eight days in the unfamiliar wilderness is still unclear.

A number of people on two Facebook groups suggested the incident was a hoax, but the couple has not been charged with any crime.

From the Daily Mail... "
Bare was found first, and was brought by the hikers to Chena Hot Springs Resort. 'Bare was uninjured and told Troopers that he had left Hovsepian to seek help.

'Bare guided Troopers and rescuers to the general area where Hovsepian was located approximately 3 miles away from the resort' local police said in a statement.

'Hovsepian was located by the team after calling out for her. Bare, Hovsepian, and the rescue teams returned to Chena Hot Springs Resort' officials explained."

Well... I'm glad Cynthia is alright.

Writing on a Facebook group made to help with the search efforts Cynthia's sister, Sabina Milby said: 'I'm Cynthia's sister and am over the moon they made it out safe.

'I'm not going into a lot of detail as it's still early and it's their story to tell but both are doing remarkably well albeit dehydrated, exhausted, starving and grateful this horrible experience is behind them.'

'They are not experienced hikers and this could have happened to anyone really. They are alive!' she added.

Here is Cynthia's FB page. She's wearing glasses in it - the degree of her visual impairment is unknown. My husband (in his late 30's) has a genetic disease that's caused blindness in one eye and partial vision loss in the other. He wears glasses, and in looking at photos, you'd think he had normal vision with glasses. But he is legally blind, and the glasses just help him maneuver around home and work. Outdoors would be a challenge. So Cynthia could need more assistance than is obvious. I do hope they are found soon. Cynthia Viola

There is so much of this I find confusing.

--Apparently, he COULD live off the grid. It was getting back to the grid that no one thought to ask if he had the ability to do.

--How did the long daylight hours in Alaska make them dazed/disoriented? Were they sober? (remember the girl in Hawaii who went missing for two (??) weeks because she took something at the start of her hike that made her dazed and confused?)

I guess no crime was committed but I hope that the female is in a safe place.

What’s interesting is that the photo of Cynthia released to the media when they went missing really looks nothing like the person they found (I get they are obviously exhausted and dirty) or the photos on her Facebook. She’s obviously older and more weathered looking now than when that photo was taken, so it’s an odd choice.

I was also wondering if the ‘could live off grid’ comment was more a reference to his ability to disappear and survive without contact with anyone before re-appearing, rather than in the traditional sense, of living actually off grid, in the wild, hunting/fishing, etc. If it’s true he/they are recovering addicts, addicts are often very good at disappearing and surviving without speaking to friends or family, but doesn’t mean they are actually living out in the woods, if that makes sense.

Strange that they didn't take their phones. Even if there wasn't cell service, phones are how most people take photos.
