Subfreezing temperatures had already begun to lock Interior Alaska in ice for the winter when 53-year-old Gerald DeBerry volunteered to join the search for a woman who'd gone missing Sunday night along the remote Steese Highway. She was found safe Monday near Frozen Foot Creek about 70 miles north of Fairbanks.

And then rescuers noticed DeBerry was missing. Nobody's seen or heard from the 53-year-old Fairbanksan since. While the search for 38-year-old Melinda "Mindy" Stratz of Utah ended with everyone celebrating her rescue, there are growing worries about DeBerry.

[snip]

Potvin's friend Gerald DeBerry last fall disappeared into the White Mountains along with his four-wheeler after helping to search for a missing woman safely found. An exhaustive search for DeBerry followed. No sign of the 53-year-old man or the 600-pound vehicle he was riding has ever been found.

"People looked and looked and looked," Potvin said this week. "People have been looking all spring."

There were expectations that at least DeBerry's all-terrain vehicle might be found in the brief period between when the snows melt in Alaska and the leaves explode into life. Then, the land is gray and open, and a lot can be seen from the air or from the ground. And yet searchers still couldn't find any hint of DeBerry.

"No one's every found anything of him," Potvin said, "but he's out there somewhere. He comes up almost every day. He had a lot of friends (here). It is weird."

still missing.

Gerald Deberry, 53, was a Fairbanks man who joined a search for a woman missing in the White Mounains 70 miles north of that community in 2011 only to disappear forever himself. The missing woman was found.

update Sept 27, 2016

<<A miner hiking near Faith Creek Mine, off 69 Mile of the Steese Highway, stumbled upon DeBerry's green, Yahama Kodiak four-wheeler over Labor Day weekend.

The four-wheeler was found stuck in the tundra. Alaska State Troopers said it was turned off. Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters speculated to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that it was stuck "at an angle that would indicate to us that the gas wasn't getting sucked up, and it probably stalled out.''>>
