An Anchorage couple says their 53-year-old son has gone missing after he was released from Providence Hospital nearly a week ago.

Parents of Joe Grant Orand say he was admitted to the hospital for mental health problems on the afternoon of Nov. 18. He was released the following day.

A cab driver picked Orand up from the hospital and took him to his house, but Orand didn’t have a key to get in, according to his mother Jolene. The cab driver was taking Orand back to Providence, when he got out of the vehicle near Tudor Road and Checkmate Drive. His parents say he hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Orand is described as white, 5’10” and balding with blonde hair. His mother says he recently lost a lot of weight while struggling with mental health issues, and only weighs about 128 lbs. He was last seen wearing black clothes supplied by the hospital.

Replying to my own post because imho this second picture looks a bit different than the original posted.

Also information provided below from a family member that may have contributed to his mental health issues

Anchorage man remains missing after leaving hospital 9 days ago

The search for a missing 53-year-old Anchorage man suffering from bipolar disorder is in its ninth day, and a family member says they’ve still found no trace of him.

“I've actually gone on all the trails around his house, down the trails and through the woods and just looking in abandoned places,” said Orand’s brother-in-law Daniel Buitrago.

“Maybe he went somewhere and fell asleep or something. I know when he left the hospital he wasn't prepared for the weather. He might have had a shirt and pants on but I don't think he had a winter coat or hat or anything like that.”

Buitrago says this wasn’t Orand’s first visit to the hospital, and the family feels they should have been contacted before he was released.

“He was in and out of the hospital for the last month or two. Suicidal thoughts and things like that,” Buitrago said. “For him to be discharged without letting anybody know and just on his own is pretty concerning to the parents and to me as well.”

Buitrago says he thinks Orand’s mental health first began to decline around this time last year following the arrest of his wife, former daycare owner Marcela Orand.

Marcela was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to second degree sexual abuse of a minor. Prosecutors said she sexually abused a client’s daughter at her home, which she was using as a licensed daycare center.
