Circumstances of Recovery: found by diver on the south side of marine view parking garage.

These remains were identified as those of Darryl Fawcett. The NamUs page is still up, but the sex was modified at some point to Male.

The Juneau Police Department, in coordination with the Alaska Department of Safety and the State Medical Examiner’s office, confirmed that the remains belong to Darryl Bruce Fawcett. Fawcett was 28 and experiencing homelessness when he was last seen in September 1999.

ETA: Darryl's NamUs page is still up at the moment too.

'Juneau police say DNA has identified human remains found in the Gastineau Channel more than 20 years ago. The State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Thursday they are the remains of Darryl Bruce Fawcett, who has been missing since 1999.'

From his picture we see how important DNA is - he is an African American or biracial with ambiguous facial features. He is slim build and that is why he was mistaken for female I guess.

From anthropology alone it would have been impossible to identify him correctly

I think he was actually full Alaska Native. All the MP websites had him under "American Indian."

Adds another layer of difficulty - Native Americans are a very diverse and often (in the skeletal record) ethnically ambiguous group.
