At the time of Mary Louise Dragoo's disappearance, Alaska was not yet a state. Statehood came in 1959. The resultant US flag which showed 49 stars (7 staggered rows of 7 stars each) was only in service for one year and replaced by the current 50-star flag when Hawaii became a state.

The 49 star US flag.

I attach a newspaper clipping from Ancestry giving some more details of the search and her family. She had 3 young children. She seems to have been well connected, both in terms of her family back in Minnesota and in that her husband was a senior park ranger, with all that implies in terms of knowledge of the area and available resources to search for her.

<<Dragoo is originally from Ortonville, Minnesota. Her husband was a park service ranger at Glacier Bay National Monument (now Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve) and the couple had two daughters. They had moved to Alaska in January after her husband finished a previous park service assignment in Washington. Dragoo's case remains unsolved.>>
