Michael was last seen on 11/16/1979 traveling from Anchorage, AK to Seattle, WA at mile 21 on Glenn Highway.

Mile 21 is the bridge over Peters Creek.

I doubt a car can be hidden in that creek. He could have turned off to Chugiak for some reason, get gasoline or something to eat. or went to Mirror Lake, a mile or two further on the drive.
