<<McCord had set out at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, for the 90-mile journey south to Wainwright, where he was scheduled to see patients the next day at the village clinic. The trip should have taken five hours.
But at 9:50 p.m., when visibility in Wainwright had dropped to zero, an emergency personal locator beacon went off 25 miles from the village. McCord needed help.
Over the next six days, dozens of search and rescue crews from neighboring villages, helicopters, fixed-winged planes and even a Coast Guard C-130 were sent to look for him.>>
<<A day before McCord left for Wainwright, the National Weather Service had begun issuing warnings about a storm that was moving from the Seward Peninsula across the North Slope. Winds gusted to 52 mph. Fresh snow blew. Visibility dropped to zero.
His last three beacon readings put McCord out on the ice. The coastline near Wainwright is flat, and with snow cover it is difficult to tell where the land meets water.>>
