If the remains were found as a result of a confession, I don't think the cops would disclose that. Not yet anyway.

There's a lot of territory to cover back there. The road goes back about ten, twelve miles and there really isn't much until you get to the lake. There aren't many houses (if any) or anything like that. There are some pullouts here and there but that's about it. Of course if you go off the road there is a lot of deep woods in that eleven mile stretch.

Could be that someone on a snowmobile came across the remains. Or perhaps they were located somewhere pretty close to the road or at the lake at the end of the road (there's a trail that goes all the way around the lake, I think it's about a 20 mile loop).

A bit about the recreation area around Eklutna Lake: http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/chugach/eklutna.htm

Just viewed the info. regarding recreation at Eklutna Lake. It always amazes me that such beautiful parts of nature can hold such sinister secrets!

I think an article said mile 7 on the road to the lake, that's still miles from the actual lake.

To me that makes more sense than all the way to the lake where people would be more likely to find them.

Gosh I feel so awful for the family. I hope the family comment on her find page is just messing space and not because of news. :(

The fact that they aren't saying makes me wonder if it is in fact, Sam. Seems a little far from Anchorage for someone to have left her, so I'm hopeful it's not, but fearful it is.

I agree with you Gut. They know. Aside from animal involvement, it's unlikely that decomp would even be a factor in Alaska at this time of year. Everything is frozen. If it's NOT her, wouldn't they rule that out quickly ??? :banghead:
Whoever it is that they found...my heart and prayers go out to them and their family.
So sad...someone is missing a family member!

"An investigation is in progress and an autopsy is set for this morning to determine more about the person found dead about three miles down Eklutna Lake Road at Anchorage's northern edge, police spokeswoman Marlene Lammers said".

Read more here: http://www.adn.com/2012/03/21/2382982/human-remains-found-near-eklutna.html#storylink=cpy

Guess I was wrong about it being near the lake.. sounds like it was still 7 or 8 miles before the campground & lake.

I pray that this is not her. I will not believe that it is true at this time.

My husband, who was a hunting guide for several years up here, thinks even with the melting during the day, a body (he only has animals to relate to, though) wouldn't decompose that much laying in the snow. So I think, along with their comments, the police probably know if it could be SK or not, and they're just keeping their mouths shut.

My heart has been in my throat since last night, I hope its not her, but then, who is it?? :(

If it is her, I would think you may see a LE press conference scheduled before we see any further info released to be written up in MSM.

How many people are missing up there? I am in a smaller town than anchorage and there is always a missing person case unsolved here.

I am in two minds here. They are looking for a cause of death, they can't determine whether it was male or female (was it naked?) The cold up there would preserve a lot. The record snow falls (and I am assuming that would include this area too) would compact anything frozen there ... unless the body was mutilated - then it goes back to waiting for a cause of death .....

then a snowshoer found it ... shortly after 5 pm, so I am assuming the snowshoer, if local, kind of knew the area and knew where decent snow for snowshoes was ... if a visitor - they should have been lost before 5 LOL

I know at this time there has been no notification to the family. The FB page has gone quiet to give everyone some quiet time. I ask you all to please pray and hope that this is not her. My heart does go out to whomever it is and their family. I just do not want to believe it is SK right now. Your thoughts and support are appreciated. Thanks.

OK well I hate to speculate on this kind of thing because it really doesn't feel right, but...I just want to put out that it could be a suicide victim. Alaska is pretty much the end of the line and we sometimes get people who come up here to end their own lives. And the local suicide rate is pretty high (I think Alaska has the highest rate in the country). Just a thought.

Whoever it is, I am sad to hear of their death but glad that at least someone's family will get some closure.

It often seems to be the case that when a person is missing in a high profile case, that bodies of other victims are found...don't know why this is, but this could well be someone other than Samanatha...JMO

I hate this part too. Seems nothing you say can offer any real answers.

The not knowing the sex is annoying the heck out of me. I have seen cops find a skull and determine the sex from that. It is never confirmed until autopsy but they have an idea.

the other thing is the lead detective was up at the site. Not sure what to think of that, but he has been everywhere and all over Sam's case.

Quiet time on the site gives me shudders

I am sorry, I thought I read somewhere that he was up there, can't find where it specifies that. The spokesperson contacted him- guess that doesn't mean he was there.

I didnt realize the lead detective was up there. :(
It is hard for the admins and family of the site. It is not quiet because there is an answer at this time, but the fact that there is not an answer.

Oh thank you for clarifying. When I read that the knot in my stomach got about 5 times bigger.

Whoever this poor person is, it seems LE would try to contact the family before they issue a press release. It's still early morning in AK.
