Fairbanks police seeking info on man missing since December

William James Patrick Sheldon, 27, was last seen leaving Badger Gas in North Pole on Dec. 22, 2017.

Sheldon told family he was headed to a Bottles Street address but never arrived there. Sheldon's family reported him missing on March 5, 2018.

Police ask that residents in the area between Badger Gas and Bottles Street check vacant buildings or abandoned vehicles for any sign that Sheldon might have taken shelter from the cold.

William James Patrick Sheldon, 26, of North Pole, was charged with two counts of felony third-degree arson and one count of misdemeanor third-degree criminal mischief May 23. According to charging documents, Alaska State Troopers received two reports of a man on a white BMX bicycle yelling at people and a third report the same man was inside a locked church. Troopers saw a man matching the callers’ description at Hurst Road and Flight Street and recognized him from previous contacts as Sheldon.

Sheldon told troopers someone let him in the church and he went there to pray, according to the charges.

About 15 minutes later troopers got a call from North Star Volunteer Fire Department that a man matching Sheldon’s description was seen leaving the scene of two suspicious vehicle fires. The fire chief told troopers both vehicles’ gas caps were open and a witness saw a man matching Sheldon’s description leaving the scene.

Sheldon told troopers he typically starts his fires with sticks, kindling and bark, and also said the Fire Department had shown up near the place he was staying a few minutes earlier.

Sheldon was detained in a trooper vehicle because they knew from previous contacts he would become combative, according to the charges. While in the vehicle, Sheldon lit his clothes on fire with a lighter, ripped the cord out of the rear radar antenna, broke the plastic along the rear driver window and kicked and broke the inside rear passenger door.

Details of Disappearance
Sheldon was last seen at the Badger Gas in the 2000 block of Badger Road in North Pole, Alaska on December 22, 2017. He was supposedly en route to an address on Bottles Street, but never arrived there and has never been heard from again.

Sheldon was transient at the time of his disappearance and sometimes stayed in vacant buildings and abandoned vehicles. Due to his lifestyle and the fact that his parents live out of state, his family didn't report him missing until March 5. Fairbanks, Alaska police are investigating.
