“The chains were attached to a door preventing the juvenile from normal movement,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “Subsequent investigation revealed that the juvenile had been restrained by this method over a long period of time.”

The boy’s mother, 32-year-old Danielle Nicole Martin; stepfather, 26-year-old Joshua Daniel Martin; and grandmother, 58-year-old Vickie Seale Higginbotham; allegedly forced the child to sleep in a dog crate at night. All three were arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.

[Mother], Danielle Martin replied that she didn’t know what the boy’s grandmother had been doing and claimed she “tried to stop her when she put him in the dog crate.” Joshua Martin also blamed Higginbotham, telling the judge that he wasn’t aware of what was happening because of his long hours.

Higginbotham tried to take the blame, according to the Advertiser, telling the judge that she “didn’t know what to do with the child” and did what was done to her as a girl.

The 13-year-old and two other children found in the home, a 12-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, are now in the custody of the Department of Human Resources.

Generational abuse. How awful for her to allegedly have experienced it and then turn around and do it to someone else.

The mother of a 13-year-old boy who was found naked and chained in their Alabama home was indicted on Monday on a charge of aggravated child abuse.

Dannielle Nicole Martin, 32, of Prattville, Alabama, had the charges against her upgraded from torture/willful abuse of a child, The Montgomery Advertiser reported.

Joshua David Martin, 26, the boy's stepfather, and Vickie Seale Higginbotham, 58, the boy's grandmother, were also indicted.



Two of the victim's uncles are also accused of aiding and abetting the abuse.

The boy was discovered on September 20, 2018, after deputies responded to an anonymous call of possible child abuse, Autauga County Sheriff Joe Sedinger told news outlets at the time.

“I made bad decisions and bad judgments,” she started out. “And I didn’t stop some things.”

“What you just said means to me that you let him use magic markers to write on the walls,” Reynolds said, sounding exasperated. “Unless you tell me what the color of the markers were and which wall he marked on, I’m not interested. Now is the time for you to tell me what you did and make it right.”

Martin paused as if to gather herself.

“I had problems with my son for a long time, and I wasn’t getting the help I asked for,” she continued. “Some decisions were made that shouldn’t have been made and I didn’t fight to stop some things that shouldn’t have happened…”

“Like chaining him to the door with a padlock?” Reynolds cut in, interrupting her.

“There were other incidents,” she said. “But he was chained at the ankles when I was arrested.”
