Governor Kay Ivey signed the Speedy Trial Act into law this morning. Surrounded by key supporters of the legislation, Governor Ivey thanked Chief Justice Tom Parker Stewart, Senator Will Barfoot, and her Chief Counsel Katherine Robertson for their efforts in turning the bill into law.
“After the bill became law, I hand-delivered my first speedy trial request to Chief Justice Stewart,” State Attorney General Steve Marshall announced in a statement. “Aniah Blanchard’s family has waited for justice for too long—this one’s for her.”
House Bill 307, known as the Speedy Trial Act, allows the governor to request the appointment of a specially-sitting judge in cases involving violent crimes, particularly when there are significant delays that prevent justice from being served in a timely manner.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBRC) - Alabama Chief Justice Sarah Stewart entered the first order under the newly-signed Speedy Trial Act to expedite the capital murder trial of Ibraheem Yazeed, accused of kidnapping and killing Homewood teen Aniah Blanchard in 2019.

The Speedy Trial Act was created to expedite backlogged criminal cases and for complex cases that exacerbate judges’ already crowded dockets. To request these resources, prosecutors must petition the chief justice who will review their request and allocate resources based on need.
Specifically, the chief justice can appoint a visiting or retired circuit judge to preside over the case and she has the option to set a special trial date, outside the circuit’s scheduled trial weeks.
According to the order, Stewart appointed retired Circuit Judge Tom Young, Jr. to preside over Yazeed’s case. Young served on the bench in this circuit for nearly 2 decades.

12/4/24 Update; The Alabama Attorney General’s Office has requested a status hearing for 1/30/25, at the Macon County Courthouse, where a trial date is likely to be set.
1/30/25 Update: The trial of Yazeed has been delayed once again, pushing the proceedings to the fall 2025 trial term. Yazeed was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, 1/30/25 for a status hearing ahead of his trial, which was originally set for spring 2025. However, the hearing was canceled. On January 27, Macon County Circuit Judge William Whorton issued a court order confirming the postponement & canceling the January 30 status hearing. Instead, a new status conference has been scheduled for 9/25/25. The court noted the case is “not ready for trial this term.” There is also a possibility the trial could be delayed into 2026.

According to court records, two male victims – one of them 77-years-old - were held against their will in a hotel room (SureStay Motel) in January 2019 on the 1200 block of Eastern Blvd. The older man was beaten until “unconscious, unresponsive, severely injured and near death” & robbed of a Rolex, rifle, handguns, wallet, bank card, clothing & unknown amount of currency. The other man was also beaten & robbed of at least $40. Bond was $295K has been revoked (12/5/19). Trial was set to begin on 4/7/25.

The man accused of kidnapping and killing Aniah Blanchard was transported from Lee County’s jail to the Macon County Courthouse Tuesday morning.

MACON COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) - The man accused of kidnapping and killing Aniah Blanchard was transported from Lee County’s jail to the Macon County Courthouse Tuesday morning.
It was Ibraheem Yazeed’s first status hearing since retired Justice Tom F. Young was appointed to oversee the case as part of the state’s newly-enacted Speedy Trial Act.
The defense requested a new gag order in the case, which the prosecution did not oppose. Judge Young asked both sides to submit to him what they would specifically like to see included in the possible new order by Friday.
The defense is seeking to hold off on a trial for nearly another year, while Judge Young’s comments pointed to preferences for a closer date.

Prosecutors said “the state will be ready whenever court says to be.”

The judge has not made any final decision on when the trial will start. He said he intends to “move forward expeditiously,” and indicated there would be another status hearing before the currently scheduled hearing in September.
I look every week, so will keep an eye out for his next hearing.
I believe I am going to "get rid" of his other charges & just leave it for Aniah!

A judge has ordered all lawyers to refrain from releasing any information or opinions about the criminal proceedings, including extra-judicial statements. 6/5/25 Update: Alabama Chief Justice Sarah Stewart entered the first order under the newly-signed Speedy Trial Act to expedite the capital murder trial of Yazeed, accused of kidnapping & killing Homewood teen Aniah Blanchard in 2019. Stewart on Tuesday appointed Tom F. Young Jr.as a judge in the Fifth Judicial Circuit to hear the case against Yazeed. 6/23/25 Update: Attorneys for Yazeed filed a motion Monday asking the judge to block trial participants from releasing information to the news media. "This case has received widespread national publicity, much of which has been inaccurate, false, speculative & inflammatory," the filing states. "The extent of the publicity has been pervasive & continuing as this particular case has been cited as a basis for multiple legislative enactments, including most recently a new statute effective this month." Attorneys for the defense are asking all attorneys, witnesses, law enforcement & court personnel to be blocked from releasing any information concerning court proceedings.
6/24/25 Update: It was Yazeed’s first status hearing since retired Justice Tom F. Young was appointed to oversee the case as part of the state’s newly-enacted Speedy Trial Act. The defense requested a new gag order in the case, which the prosecution did not oppose. Judge Young asked both sides to submit to him what they would specifically like to see included in the possible new order by Friday [6/27/25]. The defense is seeking to hold off on a trial for nearly another year, while Judge Young’s comments pointed to preferences for a closer date. They want to start in May of next year. Prosecutors said “the state will be ready whenever court says to be.” The judge has not made any final decision on when the trial will start. He said he intends to “move forward expeditiously,” and indicated there would be another status hearing before the currently scheduled hearing in September [9/25/25]. Defense attorney Whatley said the defense will motion for a mental evaluation of Yazeed as well as a motion for additional counsel.

According to new court documents, arguments & evidence presented in court could impact Yazeed's right to a fair trial, if those materials were shared to the media. A judge has ordered all lawyers to refrain from releasing any information or opinions about the criminal proceedings, including extra-judicial statements. Public communications are also being limited, including interviews, statements & comments.
*Antwon “Squirmy” Shamar Fisher (35) was arrested & charged (11/22/19) & arraigned on (11/25/19) with first-degree kidnapping. $50K bond. 12/17/19: Charges dismissed “with prejudice” by Judge.
