Ok, I'm late to the discussion, and new here! I live in the area where this is happening and grew up here. This whole story fascinates me, but there are so many holes. I'm having a tough time finding FACTS.
Someone said that UD Styx River home was on waterworld road, but I can't find that information anywhere to verify this. Last time I was down waterworld road, it was pretty creepy. Lots of cruddy trailers and everything felt kinda run down. JMO, but I could see some meth cookin' happening out there. To me, the drug theory seems like a good one. The Tillman's Corner area has always been known as a heavy drug use area. (Not that everyone from TC is a drug user!) And then having a house/trailer out in the middle of no where, could be a good place to cook.
I don't really understand this whole phone "ping" thing. But I do know that Waterworld Rd runs nearly parallel to I-10. So it seems possible she could have been passing through on I-10, bc her dad said something about her cell signal bouncing off a tower in that area. Unlikely, I know, but possible?
On her mode of transportation: I seriously doubt she walked from Tillman's Corner to Wilcox Rd (Styx River). It's all interstate and she would have had a hard time walking across the bay. Someone had asked about surveillance cameras. There are traffic cameras close to and along the I-10 bayway (bridge) and pedestrians are not allowed. She would have been picked up pretty quickly if she'd attempted to cross on foot. The bayway and the causeway are the only two ways (unless you own a boat) to get across the bay. To get on either one from I-10, you have to go through either the Wallace Tunnel or the Bankhead Tunnel, and once again, there are cameras and pedestrians are prohibited. There is a way to the causeway from I-65 and across the Cochran Bridge. She would have added quite a few miles onto her trip if she had opted to go this way.
Tillman's Corner has a few truck stops, if I'm remembering correctly. And the Oasis Travel Center @ Wilcox (Styx River area) is a truck stop. She probably could have gotten a ride with a trucker? But if that had happened, I would think that someone would remember seeing her or someone would have her on a surveillance camera somewhere.
Her brother was in jail when she went missing. He joined the search as soon as he was released. Her mom says they are 16 mo apart and ran with the same crowd. If there was anyone who could ask around and find out what happened, maybe he could. He was quoted in the local news (
http://www2.wkrg.com/news/2012/jun/14/s-ar-3974586/) saying:"I'll protect her from anything. That's why I want her to call me. She knows that I'll keep her safe."
The article went on to say: He believes something scared Brittney so badly that she is hiding and afraid. He and everyone hopes she will make that phone call.
I think what we are all wondering, is: Does he have a reason to think she is scared and hiding? Does he know something? Or is it just a case of wishful thinking, hoping she's alive and ok?
As far as the Donald Holland suicide, I can't find much info. I mean, yes it mentions that he killed himself in the news articles about Brittney. I'm just surprised his suicide isn't news worthy, given the circumstances. And in Fairhope, usually when there's a homicide or suicide, it makes the news.
Anyway, I keep seeing people advising "Leave it to LE, let forensics sort it out" etc. I don't mean to be negative nelly, but I don't have much faith in our LE. It's frustrating to think we may never find out what happened, and I realize solving these cases isn't as easy as on TV, but cases such as Angel Downs just don't instill much confidence in me (She was found on her driveway with a gsw to her head and witnesses saw her long time, on again-off again lover fleeing the scene. Two medical examiners couldn't determine if her death was suicide or homicide and apparently neither her hands nor the lover's hands were tested for GSR).
I hope they prove me totally wrong and get this figured out. I think it's hard for any of us who aren't connected to the families, to gauge how much LE is actually doing. We depend on the news to keep us updated, and when they don't, it makes it seem like no one is doing anything.
