Police are on the scene at Alabama Credit Union at 220 Paul W. Bryant Dr., behind the University’s Law School, for a confirmed hostage situation. It is unknown how many employees are in the building.

Three campus-wide alerts have been issued stating that Bryant Drive is closed and commanded that residents stay away from the area.

“UA ALERTS: Active hostage situation at Alabama Credit Union at 220 Bryant Dr. behind Law School. Continue to avoid area. Police on scene.” one of the emails sent reads.

According to AL.com, witnesses reported that a SWAT team is on site surrounding the building with guns drawn, and a helicopter is hovering over the scene.

Police are currently trying to find a way to contact the suspect inside.

Although the campus-wide alert stated that police were initially responding to a suspected robbery, AL.com reports that the situation did not begin as a robbery.
