"Search crews on Thursday were combing the area around where a 59-year-woman was last seen.

On Tuesday, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert in the case of a Janet Denise Hamner, who has been missing since Aug. 11.

Hamner was last seen around 3:30 a.m. Aug. 11 at Moe’s Travel Plaza on U.S. Highway 82 West at the Pickens County line."

Family continues search for missing Tuscaloosa Co. woman on her birthday

The passage of time has not dulled the love that friends and family still have for Janet Hamner.

She’s now been missing for six months. On Tuesday, the search for her was renewed.

Friends and family started searching again near the last place she was seen. That was Moe’s truck stop on Highway 82 in Tuscaloosa County near the Pickens County line. They felt compelled to start searching for again today because it’s Hamner’s birthday. She would be 60 years old.

Sunday marked one year since a Tuscaloosa County woman disappeared from a truck stop on U.S. Highway 82.

Janet Hamner was last seen the the morning of Aug. 11 at Moe’s Travel Plaza. Her family members recently that the reward for information has increased to $25,000.

Family, volunteers and law enforcement have conducted extensive searches in the area near the Pickens County Line and still have no idea where she could be.

Details of Disappearance
Hamner was last seen at at Mack’s Travel Plaza, (also known as Moe’s Travel Plaza), on Highway 82 in Elrod, Alabama at 3:00 a.m. on August 11, 2018. She placed some machine games inside the plaza, and surveillance video shows her leaving the parking lot, alone and on foot, after she was done. She has never been heard from again.

At the time of her disappearance, Hamner lived with her elderly mother. She was close to her nieces as well, and helped raise them after their mother died when they were young. It's uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning. Her case remains unsolved.

New information provided by the family on a June 2025 Facebook post corrected the timeline:


"On Saturday, August 11, 2018, 59-year-old Janet Denise Hamner of Coker, Alabama, was dropped off by her son around 3:00 PM at Mack’s Travel Plaza, also known as Moe’s Travel Plaza. She is believed to have spent the night at the truck stop, located at 17945 Highway 82 in Tuscaloosa County, playing machine games. The next morning, around 11:00 AM, surveillance footage captured Hamner leaving the parking lot on foot, heading west on Highway 82 toward Pickens County. It is unknown where she was going.

Hamner lived about 10 miles away on Jackson Trace Road in Coker with her elderly mother, but she also owned property on nearby Echola Road."
