JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. – The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for a Stevenson man who went missing two weeks ago.

Jackson County Sheriff Chuck Phillips says Jimmy Wayne McCarson, 61, went missing near Fabius Coal Mine in rural Jackson County.

Phillips says he was with a friend and their vehicle got stuck, and while McCarson’s friend took a nap, McCarson went for a walk and did not return.

WHNT News 19 talked to McCarson’s daughter and she said he had a stroke back in April. He has been without his medicine for over 15 days and she said it could be critical.

If you have any information on McCarson’s whereabouts, contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at (256) 574-2610.

Authorities continue search for missing man inside Jackson County coal mine

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WAFF) - It’s been almost six weeks and there’s still no sign of 61-year-old Jimmy Wayne McCarson.

“He has some physical limitations. We don’t believe he could have walked very far, because of those medical problems so I don’t think he went very far. I’m hoping of course maybe he’s somewhere and not wanting to be found. If he is, I wish he’d notify some law enforcement agencies so we can end this investigation,” said deputy Rocky Harnen.

Deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office started searching the huge area with thousands of trees after McCarson’s friend says they drove into the Fabius Coal Mine and got stuck. he told deputies McCarson went for a walk and never came back.

“We have searched it along with rescue squads, volunteers, they’ve searched it for days and days without stopping and then they’ve kind of slowed down. They have been back periodically with cadaver dogs and search dogs in an attempt to locate the gentleman. We have not been able to find him or any sign of him yet,” said Harnen.

Six Arrested After Increased Patrols at Fabius Coal Mines

An older article about drug activity at Fabius Coal Mine.

(I was trying to figure out why you would want to drive your car into one...and get stuck!)

The article is from Nov. 20, 2012, but I'm sure nothing has changed there:

“'It’s a place that’s out in the middle of nowhere and it’s a place people will go to do illegal things, and our narcotics guys just happened to be up there this weekend and found six of them doing things they shouldn’t have been doing,' Harnen said. [...] Deputies got complaints in October about possible meth activity at the area."
