I fear that the discovery of explosives material and the subsequent need for a cautious search, may have wasted precious time and led to a preventable death. Or that the two hour delay in reporting him missing (possibly due to the removal of evidence of other activities the father didn’t want discovered by LE) contributed to a possible recovery of an alive John.
According to what I have read the delay was not 2 hours. And the search area outside property not delayed.

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. — An autopsy performed Monday morning on four-year-old Johnathan Boley ruled out trauma or assault-type injuries, but a cause of death has not yet been determined, Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith said.

Johnathan was first reported missing on Wednesday, December 31. Sheriff Smith said deputies received the call at 12:28 p.m., after Johnathan’s six-year-old brother reportedly saw him crawl under a backyard fence following the family dog, Buck, around 11:30 a.m. By 1:02 p.m., Smith said deputies and RPS had cleared the father's residence ensuring the child was not in the home and called for air support and state K9's to assist in the search efforts.
.
Smith described the area where Johnathan was found. “I guess the best way to describe it is kind of a creek, but it pooled up, there was an area that was pooled up. Not sure whenever he was in it at what level it was in because obviously Friday, we experienced rain, but Saturday when we measured it it was about 4 foot deep,” he said.

interesting, I would think a drowning death would be pretty easy to determine, water or froth in the lungs or some such but this link says it may not be that simple.

Drowning is one of the most difficult diagnoses in forensic pathology. It is based on a few scattered findings, such as frothy fluid in the airways, lung damage, and fluid in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

It was a one hour delay, not two. Dad was likely looking for him in that time. But I do agree with you regarding the LE delay.

I think we’ll find that JB died the same night he went missing though.

that two hour delay info came from the January 1st presser given by the sheriff

SHERIFF - So the search for Johnathan started yesterday. We got a call about 12.28, about a missing child of 4 years old. Just the report that we got, when we got here the child is actually 5 years old. The indications were that him and his brother were outside playing around the fence line with a dog, with a lab mixed dog with a white chest. The brother said that the dog and his brother went across the fence line, he went back to notify the father that the brother had crossed the fence line. There was about a 2 hour delay at this point that we have narrowed down. There was a 2 hour delay in calling law enforcement to get us out here, but when we were called, deputies were on scene with RPS at about 1.02 and they cleared the house to make sure that the child wasn't just hiding in the house. And we had a drone in the air since 1.15 all the way up till 3.00 o'clock this morning with aviation support, with thermal imagery, trying to find the child. We have not got any heat sensors. We had volunteers out yesterday doing ground searches, law enforcement out doing ground searches. Those ground searches around the house got suspended yesterday. We have got support from the FBI, state police, local municipalities, law enforcement, volunteers. There's just a whole lot of people to name that's stepped up to really help us. But we suspended the search. We obtained a search warrant for the house. There's explosives inside the house. We encourage anybody not to take any searching on on their own, if they want to search, they need to come sign in here at Cornerstone Church, so we know who's doing what because it is a... especially around the house, we're going to keep it limited to law enforcement just because of the threat of explosives throughout the property line.

So more accurately there was at least a one hour delay in reporting and approximately a two hour delay before LE could respond and institute significant search efforts.

I'm thinking it might have been hypothermia after getting out of the water? (I don't know what happened and am speculating.)

Latest Updates

  • Volunteers found the body of Johnathan Boley at 12:55 p.m. in a creek after the dog led them to the scene.
  • While there is no official cause of death, there were no signs of trauma or assault to John John.
  • Sheriff Nick Smith made it clear the charges for the father are not related to the death of John John.
  • There were enough explosives found to level a house, Smith said.
  • Jameson Boley is being held in Blount County because the case is high profile.

Charges filed

Smith made it clear in a news conference on Monday that the charges for Jameson Boley are not connected to the missing child and he was moved to Blount County Jail because this is a high-profile case.

The father of the missing boy, Jameson Kyle Boley, is charged with unlawful manufacture of a destructive device or bacteriological weapon and two counts of chemical endangerment of a child connected to methamphetamines. He was taken into custody after what were believed to be explosive devices were found on the property.

Interesting that the sheriff would not speak about the why thermal cameras didn't seem to help (question asked @ 09:16 of the above video).

Anyone knowledgeable about why this might be the case? It seems like they had aircrafts up quickly with thermal imaging and clearly the child and dog had not travelled very far and were likely moving together.

Very sad outcome.

Possibly he'd already fallen into the water and been pulled toward the shore by his faithful companion, both of them too cold to give off a thermal image. If that's a thing. Alternately they didn't extend the search that far.

Maybe the boy was already cold and the dog was wandering/hiding - would that make a difference? IDK.

Not related to the disappearance/wandering of Johnathan; but still appeared that an unsafe environment was provided.
Imo.

I have one of the best Thermal Imaging drones available and use it extensively in my search efforts. Heavy foliage makes it difficult to see the ground below and pick up heat sources, especially small ones. Also, the search area was quite large as you can see by the map below. Even with a dozen drones in the air, it's still a daunting task.

Thermal drones are just a tool in the toolbox of SAR operations, albeit an essential tool. It is critical to get drones in the air as soon as possible, especially during the rapid search phase. They are a force multiplier and occasionally, a good drone operator will find the missing person in short order. Still, nothing will totally replace boots on the ground doing an old fashioned grid search.

Thanks, but in addition to drones - they had birds in the air that night too I think. Same applies?
