I think he is a drama queen. He could have just walked to the car, through the reporters, like everyone else does … then collapsed with relief once he was in the car … like everyone else does.

I don’t believe I have ever seen 3 grown men clutching each other like that as they walk to the car, as shown in the video posted upthread. Looked a bit like a rescue mission - all that was missing was the blanket around the shoulders.

Actually I've seen the same look on celebrities faces when photographers try to shove a microphone in their face. The initials KK comes to mind. I don't think it is a very pleasant feeling. jmo

Yes, I agree... Most celebrities are actors, too...

Of course it is the same thing. The fact that you refer to gay men as "down low" betrays your attitudes.

.

BBM - please do look up "on the down low" in the urban dictionary.

Oh... I was mistaken, too...

but I still interpreted the phrase to be one more of description... Not of a judgement...

Seeing this same behavior in other cases, I wonder if attorneys tell the client to look scared and innocent so the media can capture the moment.

Perhaps he was concerned that someone in the group would have a gun. Not uncommon for your body to react in a defensive mode and protect your chest and head area if you feel a threat. How many defendants have we seen walk out of court saying "Top of the mornin to ya." I have seen some organized crime bosses walk out of jail with total lack of fear and even joke with the media but most people try to protect themselves by covering up their face or put a hood over their head. It will not provide them protection but it's a common defensive reaction your mind does to protect your body. Think about someone you are trying to take a picture of who does not want their picture taken....they duck and hide. It's just a human reaction.

Plus I watched the video and it appears someone off camera said something to him and that is why he may have been smiling. It could have been a jailer who told him "Good Luck". Whoever it was he certainly did not feel threatened by this person. But that is just what it looked like to me. I'm not an expert on human behavior for sure.

Not that I know about these things but could RS have been in a relationship with someone else prior to this relationship? This new evidence does change the possibility of a motive for the possibility of another person doing this if RS was away at the time of her death. Could a ex interest of RS' have heard RS was leaving and did not know he was out of town? Could this person have broken into the home and waited for him knowing he would arrive before Karen got home? As we know from the crimes we discuss here there are people who feel scorned and do not take a breakup very well. Just a thought.

I know they want the attention but sometimes the photographers just try to get into their faces. Invading personal space is a big problem with the media today. You can take your pictures with those expensive, high powered cameras you have from a distance and still ask questions. Space is important if you feel there is a threat of injury or from a lawsuit when a photograph takes an exception to you "touching" them as you try to get away from them. LOL

Bingo---also, didn't he solicit the funds for the "mission trip" from people? I don't believe the church itself was funding it.

My uncle and his family just left on a ' mission ' trip to eastern Europe. They spent the last 6 month soliciting donations from everyone they ever met. It came in a monthly pleading letter. Not saying that is what RS did but that's how it went here. They had a church sponsoring them, but that sponsorship did not mean paying 100% of the cost . They sent letters to that church's parishioners as well as all of their family and friends and friends of friends begging for the money. FWIW

I agree that there is a remarkable change in Shahan's facial and body expressions from the photos taken inside the building ..to the photos taken outside (In front of the public and photographers)...

The expression originally looks confident... Almost smug...and changes to a pained, and physically/emotionally weakened state...

Very interesting... :waitasec:

I agree that these kind of people are the drama queens, but I think it's much more than that. They literally have no conscience if they do not try to cover their face. They are so into themselves and into their 'fetish' that they are oblivioned to what they are really facing. My ex was like that. He had no conscience when he walked out the door and left all four of us, and travelled about 1000 miles to his fiance...while he was still married to me. Yes, he did let me know about 4 months in advance that he was planning this, and that it was going to take place, but it showed no mercy, no conscience, and no remorse of what he was doing. We were left in a state where there was absolutely no family.

RS has no conscience.

Just jumping off your post ...

At the 2:17 mark in this video, you can see a piece of paper covered in (presumably) mission photos and saying in large red letters Will you help me to reach and teach the children of Central Asia.

I'm guessing that this is the newsletter that was spoken of that 'announced' that RS was going on a 3-year mission. If it was circulated to friends and church members, it is an announcement that would have reached a limited audience. I wonder if LE were sent a copy?

ETA: There is also a pic of a New Ministry Opportunity for Richard Shahan cover letter (?) and a photo of a prayer card immediately before the presumed donation solicitation.

Thank you for emphasizing that the expression on his face may have been due to reasons other than looking smug. It is amazing how we are influenced by the media. When I saw his photo, I was somewhat disgusted and thought how inappropriate. Then I looked at the video again and realized that his lawyer had just spoken to someone behind the desk to their right. Shahan also acknowledged the person with a nod and a slight smile which left his face quickly. The camera caught the quick smile.

Great catch!

I couldn't read what it said (the part shown) (I need stronger glasses, for sure...) .... So this is very interesting to me...

Announcement AND soliciting funds?

Hmmm...

People supported his ministry? Who could be so dumb to believe that Christian learning material for children isn't available in the Russian language? Shahan could have purchased this material from his Lazy Boy in his living room if he had wanted to do so. There are even dual language websites which he could have used to order it.

The Russian Orthodox Church is ancient, MASSIVE, and growing!
Dioceses: 157 dioceses

Theological education: 5 theological academies; 3 Orthodox universities; 2 theological institutes; 38 theological seminaries, 39 theological schools. Total of theological institutions: 87.

Total number of parishes: 29,263.

Number of clergy in the dioceses: 30,670.
Priests: 27,216.
Deacons: 3,454.

Total number of monasteries: 804.
Men's monasteries: 395.
Women's monasteries: 409.

Total number of monastic dependencies and sketes: 203.

Number of Sunday schools: 11,051.

Number of Orthodox youth centers: 587.

Number of institutions ministered to by the Church:
-- hospitals: 2,890.
-- children's homes: 1,526.
-- other social institutions: 1,690.
-- military institutions: 2,237.
-- correctional institutions: 1,207.

The Russian Orthodox Church publishes TONS of children and adolescent Christian/Holy Bible-based educational material and, yes, it's published in Russian. (I taught Sunday school at a Russian Orthodox Church for decades.)

I know! Maybe RS did not think that the Russian Orthodox church was the correct church and he wanted to teach his Baptist beliefs to the kids.

That is just my guess and the only thing I could come up with. He could have trained the teachers via web conferencing, even Skype.

Hmmm...

But wouldn't this money go directly to the church for the mission as RS can't get a tax exemption on his own, only the church can? So that money should be used for the mission and not his personal use. Is that correct?

  • #357
Ideally this money should go to the church. However, I have seen it done where a person who is known to the church will come and speak about the upcoming trip and ask for donations. They would be given to this person who should then turn them over to the church or group who is heading the trip. They would then go into a fund for the trip expenses.

Something on the scale of what RS was planning...a three year trip..... I would think donations for this trip should have been made to either his church who would send the funds on, or to BMI, the group sponsoring him. It seems like a conflict of interest for him to have control of the money. JMO.

On one video that enzeder posted, someone asked the DA how much money he "raised" for his trip aka bilked friends and his church members. The DA said he couldn't answer that at this time (wait for the trial).

In the screen shot of RS correspondence (link below - Media Thread) down at the bottom of the newsletter he appears to be directing readers to http://us.biblemission.org/ (link below) to make a donation then from what I can see he says "......Before you complete your gift click on "Add special.......donation is for the Children's Ministry Project (CMP), Every dollar you....." imo
