:bump:

Thanks to all who have posted updates.

I thought I would check in today to check for updates. I missed seeing them on the "New Posts" page. Those are some revelations in the articles and emails. Blech. What a disgusting male. :moo: The trial date is so far away. I hope it is televised.

X-rated emails uncovered in preacher murder trial

In several of the e-mails, allegedly sent to an unidentified male, Shahan describes the sexually explicit activity he’d like to pursue when the two get together. And in a separate e-mail allegedly sent to a second male, Shahan complains that the only way he could become single would be if his wife died.

To islandmixed:

Yes, latest thread. :)

Richard Shahan's attorneys respond to prosecutors: 'All they've done... so far is try to slander him'

Lentine and Sheffield said the prosecution didn't give a real response to their request, instead offering "a regurgitation of a variety of things that may or may not be admissible."

"All they've done with what they've filed so far is slander him," Sheffield said. "[The filings] have absolutely no relevance at all to whether or not they can prove the charges against him. What we were hoping to get was something factually relevant to that issue, and we haven't gotten anything so far."

"Now, the prosecution's choice of doing what they did... that was their choice to do that," Lentine said. "We choose not to try the case in the media. We choose to try the case in court based on proof, not probabilities, not suspicion. That's how cases are supposed to be tried. If they choose to do it another way, that's just unfortunate."

Alabama pastor’s email to boyfriend: ‘I pray and wait’ for wife’s death

Birmingham’s First Baptist Church has cut ties with the pastor since his arrest.

Shahan’s lawyers appeared without him on Thursday at a pre-trial hearing, Al.com reported.

They claimed prosecutors are trying to “slander” the preacher with sordid tales of infidelity.

“This case is going to be tried on fact and proof — not on some sexual orientation, not on whether there was fidelity or infidelity in the marriage," defense attorney John Lentine told Al.com.

Shahan’s trial is expected to begin in 2016.

Was Karen ill ? I mean, I wonder if she had some health issues and he hoped she would pass away on her own and then when she did not , he took matters into his own hands.
What a gross human!

ETA Well , if she knew then why kill her? I assumed the whole idea was so he could disappear the grieving ' widower' and start a new life elsewhere without raising suspicion. So , if Karen already knew, why didn't he just leave town ? Maybe he did not realize she knew. :(

He knew, that she knew:

A God fearing woman, Karen Shahan wrote in an email about the ultimatum she gave to her husband:
“I told him that he cannot keep both lives. That he will have to lose one of them,” Karen Louise Shahan wrote, according to the documents obtained by Al.com. “I said that if he was having any interactions that were not right before God that he should go to God and be completely honest with him because he knows anyway. I told him that God will reveal it to me. I told him that any texting or gmailing that does not bring glory to God has to go…”

And she was ill with Diabetes:

“There is only one way I could become legally ‘single’ and I have to wait until God grants me that gift,” Shahan wrote in an email. “It will come; the woman I live with is slowly killing herself — she is diabetic and refuses to take care of herself physically.”
Shahan noted that his wife’s mother died of diabetes. But Karen Shahan’s death from diabetes didn’t come soon enough for Shahan.

Mrs. Shahan learned about her husband’s affair in 2012 and was not into polyamory according to her emails.

Pastor Shahan’s job as a religious leader was the reason he claims he could not come out, as it would affect church attendance and hurt his image. He was, therefore, planning to leave for Scotland to seek permanent residence and start a new life with the unidentified man who is from Europe. He resigned from his position at Children and Families Pastor and the Facilities Director at First Baptist in December 2013.

Pastor Shahan has denied that he was making an attempt to flee the country, saying that he was going to perform missionary work abroad. At least 3000 of Pastor Shahan’s emails have been found and they indicate that there had been a plan for him to elope to Europe.

Infidelity isn't a part only of marriage, IMO. RS was even unfaithful to his at least 2 lovers: He wanted to marry No. 1 and have intimate contact also to No. 2/No. 3?/No. ?? That's enough for "sordid tales" which are true and no slander, I think.

This man is particularly disgusting. A pastor? I'm sure Karen never realized her life was in danger. Actually diabetes can be managed quite well. Pastor Shahan could have gotten a divorce. Who would have cared? Just because he said Karen did not take care of herself doesn't make it true. Maybe just wishful thinking on his part.

RIP Karen. Your sick disgusting twisted husband will never be free once he is sent to prison. He is prison bound and hopefully receives the death penalty.

From your lips to God's ears. I find men of God behaving in such a way particularly disgusting. Not only killing his wife but doing so to cover up his affairs. He didn't have to be a pastor . He could have just lived a regular life and slept with whoever he wanted. He chose to marry a woman . He chose to lead a church. What choice did Karen get?

I wonder if the ex-pastor's past, current, and/or potential suitors are concerned that Richard may just do away with THEM when he is "tired" of them, too?

Yet he chose to be a pastor and marry a woman. No one made him do this. yet Karen paid the price for his choices.

"Shahan was not in court on Thursday morning for the pre-trial hearing because the judge excused him since it was a brief matter. His attorneys asked prosecutors for information about past break-ins at the Shahan home.

The document filed by the state also included more details about how Karen Shahan died. The defense is arguing someone broke into the couple's home and killed Karen Shahan."

"Defense attorneys claim there is other evidence the state hasn't responded to, including a foot print found on a broken door in the home, semen found on Karen Shahan's body and also records of other recent break-ins in the Shahan's neighborhood."
Yes, I'm very intrigued by the defense's inquiries quoted above.. to what lengths did this man go to attempt to point the finger of guilt away from himself??.. it actually leads me to wonder about the possibility of his having the local "paramour" as a possible escape goat?.. Clearly it appears as though he had full intentions on permanently being with the court documented "paramour #1" over in Scotland..could it be that this man purposefully sought out the local(as in Nashville, TN) "paramour #2" to set up as a jealous lover who broke into his home and killed his wife?

IDK..just thinking aloud in looking at the most recent evidence thats come to light(the pdf court doc).. it seems to me as though possibly he's intended all along for the police/prosecutors to "follow the evidence" to a jealous lover of his having committed the murder.

If he's got access to men all over town, then he's got access to semen as well. I hope he didn't ' save ' some poor innocent man's semen after a rendezvous and has used it at the crime scene to clear himself :( ** graphic language** sorry guys
