A woman suspected in the disappearance and murder of a Hartselle woman is asking the judge to consider her character moving forward.

Jessie Kelly and her mother Loretta Carr are charged with Capital Murder for the death of Mary Elizabeth Isbell, who disappeared three years ago.

On Tuesday, Kelly sent handwritten character witness letters from several of her friends, and a letter that she wrote to the judge over her case.

We now get character references to avoid a capital murder trial? It's one thing to have them in sentencing, but now we're getting a whole trial predicated on character references? Noooooooo.....

We had a recent case (Sydney Powell, who murdered her mother Brenda Powell) where the family didn't want SP tried at all because "Brenda wouldn't have wanted it, and the family has been through enough" and "she must have been insane at the time, because she would never have done something like that". The family wanted probation only. That was one crazy trial (Sydney was presented looking insane , and defense demanded the prosecution's therapy dog be seated with the defendant throughout the trial, yeah, right...), and she was convicted, malingered "insanity".

And then there are the Suitcase Sarah letters to the judge....

But I've never seen anything like this. Anyone?

Now I'm reading the letters.... looks like some kind of jail cabal. I wonder about the coercion going on, pressure-cliques, etc.

How the public education system in the US is failing us! Could someone please organize an inmate spelling bee?

According to newly filed court documents, Jessie Kelly confessed to law enforcement officers that she and her mother, Loretta Carr, killed Mary Elizabeth Isbell. Kelly also told investigators where to find Isbell’s body.

In the new document, an investigator says Kelly confessed to going to Isbell’s home, beating her in the head with a pistol, forcing her to shower and throwing her phone in a fireplace. They then put Loretta’s clothes on Isbell and pushed her off the cliff as she “begged for her life.”

Kelly says the plan was to make it look like a suicide. The motive for the crime was not brought up in the documents.
If you put someone in your own clothes and they're found at the bottom of a cliff, suicide would not be my first inclination. Has anyone hear of a suicide putting on someone else's clothes before they killed themselves?

To all appearances, these women are not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier.

I had the same confusion. It sounds like a gross criminal event. And I doubt family identified the body or ever saw it in that condition. I decided it was metaphorical, a gory version of "she went to heaven".

It’s all religion.

Thanks. Now I don’t feel so bad for laughing at the character campaign.

Does anyone know why they killed her?

This should be a DP case for both, imo.

Character? This woman is what, 22? She's managed to be charged in Missouri for felony burglary (multiple counts), and capital murder in Alabama. Didn't she ever hear that character is what you do when no one is watching? Said another way, character is what you do, how you conduct yourself, when there's nothing on the line. (Like, say, the DP!!)

I read in an earlier article, but I can't remember which one, that it was over a boyfriend. Since I can't reference it, I'll put IMO.

Yes, the letter writers and the perps haven't yet taken the jail course where they learn what "character" is, values systems, taking responsibility, what empathy is, being real....

I'm not sure we know who THE boyfriend is. Because maybe there are several boyfriends in this story?

"she was saved, she was washed in the blood" is pretty standard evangelical Protestant (I can't speak to other denominations) wording to express faith. It's the title and theme of a popular hymn. Country star Randy Travis had a hit recording a few years ago.

That's a good question! I hadn't considered that he might be "missing" as well.

A woman accused of kidnapping and forcing a missing woman off a cliff over two years ago was indicted in April by a DeKalb County Grand Jury.

44-year-old Loretta Carr is charged with capital murder (kidnapping) in connection to the death of Mary Isbell. Carr’s daughter, Jessie Eden Kelly, was also charged with capital murder for Isbell’s death.

[...]

The capital murder charges stem from multiple other laws broken during the incident including kidnapping, according to officials.

[...]

Court records show that Carr has an arraignment hearing set for May 8, while Kelly has a status conference set for June 6. The state is seeking the death penalty against Carr.
