They need probable cause to request a search warrant. The police can't go searching people's homes because their friend decided to take a break from life. They need something to substantiate a possible reason this person's home was involved in something criminal.
Yes...I get that. But IF the the "friend" has been changing her story, wouldn't they have her for making false statements?

Sorry is it just me or would police really ask a member of the public for a shovel?!

Doesn't that go against cross contamination and similar forensics?
Ha! Yeah, I could only imagine them doing it in some sort of an emergency. If you’re looking to recover a body, you have equipment and trained people at your disposal.

They wouldn’t borrow a shovel for that.

Authorities are searching backyards with flashlights along Chapel Drive. There are K9 units and over a dozen unmarked and marked cars at the scene. Authorities are coming in and out of the taped off area.

Oh man my heart dropped. On the live feed, any clues to a link to PH?

Looks like they’ve been in the area investigating since this afternoon.

No word from any authorities yet on what they are investigating, but authorities from Hueytown Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office have been at the scene since at least 3:30 p.m.

The shovel thing is weird. Makes no sense for the recovery of a body for evidence preservation/contamination etc. So what else would they need a shovel for?

Any other missing cases in the area that would involve specific agencies like Birmingham and Trussville that we know of?

ETA: someone is saying the the tape is actually being removed. They've been there quite a while according to a reporter

Praying! Where is this in relation to PH? Home, work, bar, etc.
If the search is happening in Hueytown, AL, it's roughly 43 min from her home.
