Cadaver dogs search for missing woman at Little River Canyon | WHNT.com

Feb 1 2021
Search and rescue teams spent hours Monday at Little River Canyon National Preserve looking for a woman who’s been missing for just over a month.

The weather was incredibly cold with blistering winds. There was even snow falling off and on in Fort Payne.

While volunteers said those are not ideal conditions for them, it is actually beneficial to the dogs themselves.

The dogs are taught to find a particular odor, that odor travels on the wind, so having wind is good for us. It also travels in the water, so we like movement of air and movement of water because that helps carry scent,” said North Alabama Search Dogs Association President Darcy Harbough.

Harbough has been working with human remains dogs for 24 years

She and her dog Beckett joined about nine other dogs, some fromSouthEastern Search Dogs to search for Yvonne Covington.

Noting details of search:

“Probably three quarters of a mile, byt three quarters of a mile. They’ve got an area where they’re wanting us to stick to,” added Collins.

“It’s 36 degrees or so this morning. It’s dangerous for searchers if they get close to water, if something happened and they went in the water, it would be detrimental, same for dogs,” explained Grant.

Thank you for the link. Noting that there is an audio interview of Yvonne's sister in the article.

From the article:
  • Yvonne was last seen December 26th by her family in Fort Payne.
  • “She was living with her son in Fort Payne for a few days and she asked him to use his car to go buy cigarettes and no one has seen her since,” said PS.
  • Fort Payne PD found Covington’s car the night she disappeared at Little River Canyon Park.
  • Covington’s cellphone was also inside the car.
  • Members of the North Alabama Search Dogs Association began another sweep of the surrounding woods on Monday.
  • PS said her goal is to get closure for her family and Covington’s children, while relying on prayers to keep them strong.
* I think I must have been looking at the Jan 2021 calendar when I created the thread instead of Dec where the 26th falls on a Saturday. I will request correction. Sorry about that!

For more than six weeks now, a Centre woman has been missing from the Fort Payne area, and despite searches on the ground and from the air, no trace of her has been found.

[...]

Her husband, QC, said it's been a difficult time since then for the family.

He said there have been a number of searches and Fort Payne police have done all they can.

"My hat's off to them," QC said. As a former law enforcement officer, he said he understands and appreciates the work they and others have put in, trying to find her by air and by ground searches and searches of the water at the falls.

[...]

The Covingtons live in Centre and Yvonne Covington worked at The Children's Place in Fort Payne.

QC said there had been concerns in that his wife might harm herself, and she was hospitalized for five days at Gadsden Regional Medical Center, prior to going missing. That has heightened his concerns for her.

When she came home, Quazzi Covington said she wanted to go stay with her son at his home in Fort Payne for a while. That was where she was last seen by family members.

[...]

Authorities and family members have contacted a Texas search group about joining in the effort to find her.

The vehicle that she had been driving was found later that same night, by the National Park Service on the Cherokee County side of the Highway 35 Bridge. Search & Rescue teams spent several hours on Monday (February 1st, 2021), at Little River Canyon National Preserve searching nearby woods and along the river banks using cadaver dogs in an effort to locate Ms. Covington.
