Alan was last seen in Austell, Georgia in October 1989. He was employed as an air traffic controller with the US Navy, and was stationed at a naval air station in Bermuda. He came home to Austell on leave in October. When his leave was over, he told his mother he would see her at Christmas. That night, someone from Bermuda called Alan's father and said that Alan hadn't arrived back at the base as scheduled.
Alan had told each parent that the other parent would drive him to the airport to return to Bermuda. Based on this inconsistency, the Navy believed he absconded and listed him as AWOL. The police refused to accept a missing persons report until 2007.
