That's a point. He's probably going to be criticized for that. Search teams haven't even reached the wreckage yet.

I wonder if military planes will be able to land in that area? Are there any problems associated with helicopters landing on sand, anyone with aircraft knowledge?

You NEVER assume they are all dead until you get there and verify.
There has even been survivors when a plane crashed into a mountain and became a fireball. :twocents:

WRECKAGE and remains from a missing Air Algerie flight have been found in a remote region in Mali on the border of Burkina Faso, an official says.

Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita is due to visit the crash site, which is south of the Malian town of Gao, today.

The jetliner carrying 116 people on board crashed on Thursday in a rainstorm - the third major international aviation disaster in a week.

A Burkina Faso official says investigators saw no survivors in the wreckage, Reuters reports.

Breaking on the BBC at the moment; there are no survivors. The BBC tweet that led me to their web page also said that the black boxes have been recovered. Page is still being updated.

Mr Hollande said one flight data recorder had been recovered after French troops reached the crash site in neighbouring Mali.'

Passengers were due to arrive at three different airports, so french authorities will be gathering them all together at the crisis centre set up at Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris, Saturday. It doesn't mention if families from other countries will be flown over if they wish.

A column of 30 french troops are en route to the crash site (I bet that's the French Foreign Legion).

'France's interior minister said Friday that terrorism cannot be excluded as a cause for the tragedy, though it was likely due to bad weather.'

After the chaos and dreadful behaviour we have seen with flight MH17 in Ukraine, it is a relief to see organized, professional french soldiers guarding this wreckage and ensuring everything possible will be done to bring the victims home as soon as possible, and discover the reasons for the crash.

I wish the search teams and investigators well. This is an incredibly difficult but important job they are doing - bringing the missing home.
