Some countries ( I'd have to look up which ones again) have banned pork products from Mexico and the U.S. since it is believed that the flu started at Smithfield Farms pork company in Mexico. Also, I imagine there were cases of flu brought across the border by car during Easter week with all the folks coming and going visiting relatives for the holy week.

I guess the thing that bothers me most about this flu is that it might behave like the 1918 flu in that it could produce a limited number of cases this spring causing people to become complacent, and then return with a vengeance this coming fall. A minimum of 25% of the population in the US came down with the flu in 1918. In addition to all the illness this could bring, it could likely effect our gross domestic product, already weakened, thus lengthening the recession.

I read something interesting on another forum I visit. Another reason why there might be more deaths in Mexico City is the pollution factor. People who live there may already have had their respiratory systems compromised. Sounds reasonable to me. Our worst pollution centers are LA and Chicago. Of course neither is anywhere close to the extremes of pollution in Mexico City.

I think the reason so many are dying from this flu in Mexico and not anywhere else is apparent in the below linked article. It gives me hope that people in the US will not be hard hit by this:

ETA: Good lord. I can't post the entire article, you just have to read it. No wonder so many people are dying. We definitely won't see that problem here.

They were told there wasn't a problem. Then told it was a regular flu. Only aknowledged a problem after the U.S. diagnosed it. Not distributing antivirals. Refusing treatment because of fear, lack of insurance. Telling people they are not sick when they are sick.

NJ Identifies 5 Probable Swine Flu Cases


New Jersey health officials say they've identified five probable cases of swine flu in people who recently traveled to Mexico and California.

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services said Monday that all have mild forms of the flu and none has been hospitalized.

State health officials say there are suspected cases of swine flu in North Carolina, but investigators declined to say how many cases or where they were located.
Dr. Jeffrey Engel, the state health director, said Monday evening that officials are involuntarily isolating patients who may have the virus. But he said the handful of cases are sporadic and in different parts of the state. Earlier in the day, Engel had told reporters that there had been no cases reported in the state.
Investigators are gathering specimens and hope to know whether the cases are "probable" some time Tuesday and will seek confirmations by Wednesday.

Its seems Mr Medusa and I had a reaction to something in the soil - we were gardening Sat am prior to this hitting both of us in fairly rapid succession, although I got it worse. I have a weakened immune system, so, that figures. I was pulling weeds along the front of our home, which is right on the street, and apparently it is looking like a build up in that soil from maybe the mosquito spraying - even though it hasn't started yet this year. I am a vigorous weed puller!

It is really scary to have pretty much all they symptoms (except sore throat) while the tv is talking about Swine Flu. I am wearing masks from now on when doing yard work. And gloves!

This sounds like the majority of my experience with doctors and the health care system. Many here in the U.S. will face the same problems due to lack of insurance, not enough money to buy antivirals, and doctors refusing to test for swine flu.

A school in SC is closed today because of suspected swine flu. Some seniors and chaperones took a trip to Cancun a couple of weeks ago and returned with flu-like symptoms. Test results aren't due back until today, so the school was closed Monday and today.
