Her brother also said that she had mental problems and the family dealt with the mental problems over a period of time. I think the judge dismissed that defense.

No, judge agreed she was mentally ill. But it didn't raise to the level of legal insanity.

I think his so-called suicide note is a set up for his defense.
I certainly wouldn't assume he is being honest in that note. He certainly never killed himself. If he is claiming he didn't know Gina was so young, it could very well be he is trying to present himself in a better light. Maybe he thinks penalties are more severe for kidnapping a younger girl.

This note situation reminds me of Bart Simpson from The Simpsons TV show, how he would break something and immediately say "I DIDN"T DO IT!" before anyone even knew anything was wrong.

When I read information about his note I can't help but focus on his insistence that he ONLY did this to three girls, nobody else, and it's purely sexually motivated. It makes me wonder what he's hollering "I DIDN"T DO IT" in regards to, with these statements.

The psychologist/detective/suspicious mom in me thinks to herself at this point, "What did he just do that was so heinous that he panicked and wrote out all of this stuff in such away that it comes off as a defense rather than a confession?"

I'm probably not saying this well...

Not singling out you or your post, just the most recent one I saw in front of me talking about this subject -

Gina was in special ed classes, and was only in 7th grade even though she was 14. She would've been older than Arlene unless Arlene was held back also. It's possible that Ariel knew she was older than his daughter but didn't know how MUCH older. I have seen photos of Gina from the time she went missing and it might be possible to think she was 16 in my opinion. Perhaps he thought this was the case as well.

No, I don't think you're trying to single me out. I just didn't know the US system delayed a special need child's education. In Canada we mainstream those kids by assigning classroom aids to kids with special needs so they can stay with their own age groups.

About Ariel writing in his suicide note that he was a sex addict. Why the hell didn't he join SAA or something, why did he kidnap 3 girls and rape them and keep them captive and brutalized them for 10 years?? He may well be a sex addict, but not all sex addicts kidnap and rape victims. If he knew what was wrong with him, that he was sick, why didn't he seek help for it??? This makes me sick.

The suicide note was written in 2004, the same year he was investigated for an incident that occurred in his job as a school bus driver. Officials apparently were at his home. He may have decided to write it after that in case he ever got caught, as some kind of defense.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162...ro-claimed-he-was-sexually-abused-as-a-child/

"Investigators inferred from the 2004-dated note that Castro was going to commit suicide. He asked in the note that all of his money be provided to each of his victims."

Some good information on Emily's murder-suicide attempt was in the Daily Mail, including these quotes from her brother.

" 'Emily's mental illness was something the family saw every day, and it was regrettable it failed to meet the legal definition of insanity.'

She was not an 'animal who tried to kill her daughter out of revenge', he said."

I'm not sure that her being held back was part of the typical "special education" school system, because generally speaking we do as you describe. I don't know all the details behind her situation, but I heard on CNN earlier today that she was still learning to read when she disappeared.

Also saw on CNN's news ticker on the bottom of the screen earlier that a reporter who spoke with Gina said she's doing great, but she can no longer speak Spanish. I wonder if that's normal? I've never been bilingual so don't know how quickly/easily someone would forget..

Somewhere in these threads it was said the brothers inherited money when their dad died. I believe he died in 2004. So all of sudden Ariel has some money, but hes stuck in Cleveland because he has these three girls. I absolutely positively believe he was drunk when he wrote that suicide/confession note. imo

Yes, she claimed 50 cents was to call her mother.
So did AC just happened upon Gina walking home alone because she had no money left for a bus?

Yes I understand, but it didn't cost 50 to use a payphone at that time. All I said was it's a possibility whether the daughter stated it in the interview or not. MY thoughts on it.

The cost of a pay phone call in 2004 was 35 cents. If all she had was quarters for busfare, two of them would have been required to place the call.

Great minds, I was just going to post that. She said there was no abuse in her home. Her brother said there was lots of abuse. He stated his father beat his mom after she had brain surgery, that's why she eventually left him. How in the world does this gal say there was no abuse??? Especially since we know Castro abused all the three women he had in captivity??

I think she misunderstood the question. I think she thought he was asking if she had ever seen any violent incidents against the girls at her dad's home.

I guess it depends on the age group. I remember a young Chinese couple that moved to Canada with their young sons (9 & 11). Within a couple of years their kids decided to stop speaking Chinese all together. Mind you, they spoke Chinese at home so it's not like they'd lost touch with their mother tongue. It seemed to me that it was much easier for them to speak English even with their parents. I guess at that age kids have so much to learn that their mind has to decide what to keep and what to go.

No. Arlene Castro is the one who walked with Gina before Gina went missing.

Nope, according to the AMW video, Arlene Castro was the last person to see her before she went missing.

I am taking this new version of events with a grain of salt until we get more confirmation. I really don't think Arlene had any idea what happened.

So, Arlene Castro saw Gina after this other friend?

bbm

Jessica Aponce, 24, said she walked home with DeJesus the day the teenager disappeared.

"She called her mom and told her mom she was on her way home and that's the last time I seen her," Aponce said. "I just can't wait to see her. I'm just so happy she's alive. It's been so many years that everybody thinking she was dead."

More information on MK and family. "Neither Knight's grandmother nor her mother, who moved to Florida but flew back to Cleveland this week, have seen her.
"No, we haven't - on her request. She does not want to be seen by family," Deborah Knight, the grandmother, told Reuters."...

"During the women's captivity, CNN reported, their tormentor showed them televised coverage of vigils held by the Berry and DeJesus families, who have said they never gave up hope the girls would return home alive.
Knight's family did not hold vigils and her grandmother said they were certain Michelle Knight was dead."

OT- The same thing is done in the US. It depends on the child's needs - some are in full-time ("self-contained") SpEd classrooms, others get pull-out services for 30 minutes or an hour each day, but many get inclusion services in the 'regular' classroom.

Coming in late today and haven't read all the way back but I had a couple of comments-
As for Gina and her special education- holding kids back in school use to be common now with more detailed IEP's kids are put through with extra help. Interesting about her not being able to speak Spanish anymore-I would have thought AC would speak Spanish, but it is something to think about, was Spanish her first of second language? My kids are bilingual English/ASL and I know that for 2 of them English is their primary language and if they aren't around their sister and not using ASL they regress in ability- but for the deaf daughter who uses ASL as her primary communication I can't see her loosing that ability if she couldn't use it- long story short from what she tells us she thinks and dreams in ASL (if any of that makes sense)

As for Emily- other countries take into consideration the mental effect of new mothers, in most cases they don't prosecute for infanticide by mothers whose kids are less than a year (maybe 2) so when you think about that added to the obvious long term mental issues Emily just might not be a monster at all- just a sick woman with demons.

wow thanks ~ I know I haven't used a pay phone in many years, but I thought at that time it was only 25 cents.

I was completely bilingual ~ went to an entirely french school from K-graduation...but never spoke french at home or elsewhere for that matter. I can still read french and mostly understand if people speak slowly, but except for the most basic sentences, it didn't take long for me to not be able to have a conversation in french.

Speaking of language I have a question about What language Amanda speaks. Does she speak both English and Spanish?

Remember Angel Cordero who speaks only Spanish? If Amanda speak only English how did the two of them communicate when she was asking him for help? According to Cordero he didn't have any problem understanding her.

Arlene claims she saw Gina before Gina went home on foot. Normally Gina rode a bus, but because Gina gave Arlene 50 cents, Gina had to walk home. Arlene has not mentioned that other friend at all. Also Arlene didn't mention her father.

Someone mentioned it was against the law for the child to be out of school without immunizations. I'm an Ohio homeschooler. Age of notification is 6, so you don't have to have a child in school OR notify about homeschooling until after the age of 6. So this fall she would have had to notify. Immunizations are not required for homeschoolers at all.
