12 years ago today, Amber Hagerman was abducted near her grandparents' home in Texas and was later found dead. Today we look at how her tragedy has prevented so many others.

On January 13th, 1996, Amber Hagerman was abducted near her grandparents' home in Arlington, Texas. Four days later, Amber's body was found at the bottom of a creek. Her death remains a mystery.

Today, the memory of this little girl lives on with the AMBER alert system. AMBER alert was conceived after the death of Hagerman in an effort to instantly notify the community to assist in the search and safe recovery of a missing child.

Sunday is National AMBER Alert Awareness Day

On January 13th, 2013, the AMBER Alert program will be commemorated not only in Louisiana, but across the country.

Since the program's inception in 2002, 602 children have been successfully recovered in the United States as a direct result of the AMBER Alert plan.
