Anand was allegedly abducted by his mother, Arathi Bandi, on July 17, 2008. His parents were fighting over custody of him at the time. His father sought a custody order that prohibited taking Anand out of the state. The court ruled that either parent could take him out of the country, but only for 5 days at a time. On July 17, Arathi flew with him to her native India and never returned. A federal warrant for Kidnapping was issued for Arathi on August 25, 2009. Arathi may go by the alias last name Anne.
