Police say that an elderly man who was reported missing from the city’s Downsview neighbourdhood on Friday “may be in danger” due to the extreme heat.

Angelo Velocci, 78, was last seen in the Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area at around 4:40 p.m.

In a message posted to Twitter on Saturday afternoon, police said that there is growing concern for Velocci’s safety amid sweltering temperatures that are expected to reach 36 C by later today.

Health of missing 78-year-old man 'in jeopardy' as heat wave grips Toronto, police warn | CBC News
"With the hot weather and the fact that he's been missing now for almost 24 hours [and] may not have had any food or water — his safety and his health are in jeopardy,"
"Investigators are asking anyone living in the area to check their backyards or do a quick walk around their neighbourhood in an effort to help look for Velocci.

The notice comes as Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Toronto with a forecasted high of 36 C on Saturday, but it will feel like 45."
Police describe Velocci as having a thin build and receding hair.
He was last seen wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt, beige pants and brown slippers."

Police are asking that residents in the area check their backyards to ensure Velocci hasn’t made his way there.

The concern has heightened as the sweltering temperatures rise and police said his safety might be in danger.

The command centre has been set up at Downsview Secondary School in North York.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 416-808-3100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477."

Why would 36 degrees feel like 45 degrees? Is there a hot wind?
It is very humid making it feel much hotter!
Heat Warning for Southern Ontario
"Extreme heat event for the Canada Day long weekend.
On Canada Day, daytime highs are forecast to reach the mid thirties with humidex values into the mid forties. Daytime highs in the low thirties are expected to persist through most of next week. Overnight low temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid twenties, except high teens in some rural areas, providing little or no relief from the heat.
This will be the most significant heat event in the past few years.
Extreme heat affects everyone.
The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors."

Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

36 degrees is a nice summer day where I live, but I imagine if you are not acclimatized to it, it affects you more.

It's the humidity. We had this kind of weather here in May. Exhausts you VERY quickly, especially at that age!

Glad he's been found.

What a relief that he's been found. Where I live we're in the upper 20's right now, with lower humidity than usual, and it's already more than I'd like. And I'm a young woman! I can't imagine what a rough day this older gentleman has had :( he was certainly in danger.

It's the humidity. It can be oppressive and wears you out quickly. I'm from the west coast and can't get used to it. I still don't understand the "feels like" thing because sometimes it will be 26 and they'll say it "feels like 35" but I know what 35 feels like and it's not the same thing!

I wonder how many people leave their homes because they don't have a/c.

1995 Chicago Heat Wave
Most of the heat wave victims were the elderly poor living in the heart of the city, who either had no working air conditioning or could not afford to turn it on.
