This saturday, Australians and New Zealanders will be pausing for ANZAC Day.
ANZAC Day commemorates the first major battle that soldiers from both nations were involve in during WWI, but now it pretty much commemorates all conflicts involving our military.
This year is the 100th anniversary of Australian and New Zealand forces landing on Gallipoli on 25 April.
In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The objective was to capture Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany.
The Gallipoli campaign was a disaster for both nations, thousands dead. Yet it cemented our determination, mateship and through some of the actions of soldiers during the battle, created the ANZAC spirit.
As an Australian, I've grown up in a country that fights above its weight, doesn't let things knock it down, stands up for what it believes, doesn't forget its friends or its responsibility to others.
Sure, this could be describing any number of countries, especially during war time, but Australians and New Zealanders know what it means.
So this saturday, raise a glass to your ANZAC mates down here.
