Solar eclipse in Michigan: What will 99% look like?

Why it still won't even be enough to see the solar eclipse at 99.9% totality.

There are several places around Metro Detroit where you can see next week’s solar eclipse at 99% totality, but that’s still not going to be enough.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America and all of Michigan will at least get to see a partial eclipse.

This is the last solar eclipse visible in the Contiguous United States until 2044. The path of totality is the area where people will be able to see the Moon completely cover the Sun. It’s about 100 miles wide.

The only place in Michigan located within the path of totality is Luna Pier in Monroe County. It’s right on the edge of the path of totality, so the total solar eclipse will only last 19 seconds there. In comparison, totality will last three minutes and 49 seconds in Cleveland, Ohio...

I read that Sandusky, Ohio will have the longest time for totality, over 4 minutes. Interestingly, where I work in Ohio the time for totality is about 1 3/4 minutes. But about 20 miles south where relatives live, the time for totality is 3 1/2 minutes. So we plan to go to relatives' front yard to watch the eclipse.

The mayor of Luna Pier is begging people to drive across the border line into Ohio to watch the eclipse, because they are such a tiny community and will be overrun by visitors if Michigan residents decide to stay in Michigan and want to see totality in Luna Pier. Also, the road into the Luna Pier community is under construction and traffic will be a huge mess. In any event, he says they'll do the best they can!

Apparently wispy Cirrus clouds will be okay if we end up with these kinds of clouds tomorrow during the eclipse where we are in Ohio.

Rain forecast for Sunday afternoon will move out of Ohio by Monday morning, leaving Ohio's prime eclipse viewing areas with mostly wispy Cirrus cloud cover for the day.

Those 4- to 5-mile high clouds comprise ice crystals which might make for dramatic effects during the corona-phase of the eclipse, projected to last from 1 ½ to 4 minutes long.

"The good thing about Cirrus clouds is that they are typically somewhat transparent," said Logan Clark, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Wilmington. "They impede your view of the sun, but it won't be blocked entirely."

That's what we have right now. Mostly blue skies with cirrus clouds, more solid cover from the south, but blue sky patches still.

We're about an hour's drive to Luna Pier, but neither of us wants to be stuck in heavy traffic on I-75 heading to Luna Pier or returning home. Our best view will be in our backyard looking south-east. Water temperatures are probably quite cold, but there will likely be people trying to view the eclipse from watercrafts on Lake Erie.

We're about an hour's drive to Luna Pier, but neither of us wants to be stuck in heavy traffic on I-75 heading to Luna Pier or returning home. Our best view will be in our backyard looking south-east. Water temperatures are probably quite cold, but there will likely be people trying to view the eclipse from watercrafts on Lake Erie.

It does sounds like heavy traffic could be a big problem in a lot of places. Some lucky folks can view totality by walking out of their residence and looking up (wearing eclipse glasses, of course!).

Detroit area looks like they'll have clear skies

Still not a lot of traffic in Cleveland highways. Kind of quiet, but its a Sunday night.
