Extremely so. I have twins (a girl and boy) who are now 8 years old. They were born 13 weeks early, spent 38 and 45 days in the NICU and have been healthy since. They were only in the NICU as long as they were because they needed to gain weight and my son was being stubborn at taking a bottle.

Viable from 24 weeks, though the risks of serious disabilities are pretty high. I believe at that age there is only a 25% chance of a baby being completely normal and a 25% chance of them needing lifelong 24 hour care due to incomplete development of brain and various organs.

Cruel in what sense? For not trying to get medical help, or for dumping the bodies?

From what I can see and found out by googling, this is a sparsely populated rural county with a declining population and a degree of poverty. If labour came on very quickly it's possible the woman had no chance to get to hospital for the birth. The link above mentioned the results of the preliminary autopsy. I would hope there would be a full one which might cast more light on how and why these babies died.

Certainly not impossible, though I would imagine it would be bloody difficult to conceal a twin pregnancy unless the mother avoided all social contact in the later stages.

Who knows? Maybe the mother is another Jaycee Dugard and is being held captive by a psychopathic rapist or a paedophile father.

How would any sheriff know who is pregnant in his town unless the mother or her boyfriend is known to the local sheriff?

This whole thing saddens me, so many mama's and daddy's with empty arms that would have ecstaticly taken these little ones and loved them. Fly high little sweetpeas.

Another question this brought up, however, have they said anywhere what race the babies were? Missing teen w/purple suitcase is black/African American.

Yes, each and every option is just awful.

I'm leaning more to were left to die. Only because it seems to coincidental for two babies to die when their mother was planning to abandon them like that anyway.

That is just my opinion about it. I may be completely wrong. For all I know, Mom might not be safe either.

Yes, I'm trying REALLY HARD not to judge mom because we don't know the situation. We don't know if they were born in a hospital with the best medical care or if they were born at home or on the streets. While really viable at the gestation they were born-- that viability number quoted up thread is probably if born in a hospital with people who know how to take care of preterm infants. We also don't know who put them in the suitcase. Mom could be a minor, victim of domestic violence or trafficked and not in a safe situation herself. These babies could have been taken from her. She needs to be found first to make sure she is safe. Then, if the investigation found these babies died from violence or neglect at her hands the law can take care of her.

I'm always unsure when it comes to Facebook, but the following is from the local sheriff (which is a public page)

There is an update from the sheriff that can be found on "Cross County Sheriff" (which is the local police/sheriff/public Facebook page)

They have interviewed MANY people (19 females and 2 males). Although they are NOT releasing the race, he stated "the females that were pregnant with twins have either had them, still pregnant , had them and they are in DHS custody or some died in the womb and medical documentation was provided."

They did state that the unidentified twin was male
