I would guess that to find the answers to your two questions, you need to go and look up the physical newspapers published in the area where he went missing. Remember that 1995 was just the beginning of the internet boom, and not all information was published online then. Much of todays social media didn't exist back then, and if he had quickly been found safe, maybe LE hadn't been informed.

The only thing relating to Derrick that I could find in newspaper archives is an ad put out by NCMEC in 1996 and again in 1999. I could find no articles at all. His middle name is Mac.
