LITTLE ROCK -- Federal agents arrested a Russellville physician on an explosives charge in an investigation authorities said was separate from a car bombing last month that injured the chairman of the state Medical Board.

Dr. Randeep Mann, an internal medicine specialist in private practice, was arrested Wednesday night and was in federal custody Thursday following arraignment in U.S. District Court in Little Rock on a charge of unregistered possession of hand grenades, a spokesman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said.

4Kidz Thank you for the update! From the link you provided:

"Mann has a history with the Medical Board.

In July 2006, the board restricted Mann's prescription-writing privileges after officials say several of his patients died from a lethal mix of drugs or an overdose of prescription medicines.

Mann and the board reached an agreement, ending a hearing on charges against the Russellville doctor, under which Mann was allowed to keep his medical license but was barred from prescribing narcotics.

Three years earlier, the board suspended Mann from prescribing controlled substances for one year. The Russellville Courier newspaper reported at the time that Mann violated state regulations by prescribing methadone to treat drug addiction and by failing to get a second opinion before prescribing another narcotic."

Federal agents immediately suspected the grenades belonged to Mann, who had shown them a launcher a month earlier when they questioned him about the Pierce attack. Agents say they found practice grenade rounds and launchers, as well as $1 million worth of machine guns while serving a search warrant at Mann's home, near the state's only nuclear reactor.

Originally set to begin next week, the trial of a Russellville doctor charged with federal weapons and obstruction of justice charges has been rescheduled for March 15.

U.S. District Judge Brian Miller agreed to reset the trial date for Randeep Mann and his wife, Sangeeta "Sue" Mann, who faces obstruction and concealing evidence charges, after a motion filed by his attorney.
. . .

He pleaded innocent this month in a new seven-count indictment charging him with illegal possession of 98 hand grenades and a machine gun, two counts of possessing unregistered firearms and one count each of conspiracy to obstruct or impede proceedings and aiding and abetting in the concealment of evidence.

Randeep Mann, who pleaded innocent to the charges, has been identified by federal authorities as the prime suspect in a West Memphis car bombing that injured state Medical Board chairman Dr. Trent Pierce.

Dr. Trent Pierce, the head of the State Medical Board who was hospitalized for months after a February 2009 car bombing outside his home, is on the list to testify in the case against his alleged attacker.

Jury selection is getting underway in Federal Court in Little Rock this afternoon in the case against Dr. Randeep Mann, of London.

Mann also faces several unrelated weapons charges.

The jury pool is made up of 85 people. Twelve of those and two alternates will be selected for the trial.

Before jury selection started today, the government announced in court that its list of witnesses in the case totals about 130 people, including Pierce.

Pierce served on the board when Dr. Mann was reprimanded for over prescribing pain killers, where allegations were made that several patients died from overdoses.

Just got through reading through the whole thread. I am guessing this is what happened...

Since he is the prime suspect in the "bombing" and since he was fond of hand grenades, I am thinking maybe he just simply pulled the pin on a grenade, and placed the tire over the handle of the grenade to keep the handle down. The weight of the tire would keep the handle down until someone moved the tire, and then it would explode after a short delay once the handle extended.

The wounds to the Dr said he had shrapnel in him, so I think this is basically how the perp setup the grenade under the tire, and caused the explosion.
