It is a patriarchal sect so I'm sure special rules for boys.

That's not true!!

The girls are also handy with sewing and cooking.

You are so correct. And of course, changing diapers. Because males would be forced to have sex with infants because of their defrauding nappy sexiness.

Good to know women have some value in this sick philosophy. (Although "philosophy", meaning "love of knowledge" may be a misnomer in their case)

I wonder how the Duggars would have responded, if at all, if the police report hadn't been published?

When this first hit, it was just the article in In Touch. I saw lots of reaction from folks saying that they didn't believe it was true and that it was just a nasty tabloid story.

The Duggars didn't say anything until the "proof" (redacted report) was also released.

I found an a site that had this story back years and years ago. In 2011 this story was online but hushed.
That really bothers me. <modsnip>

And providing much of the education of and childcare for their younger siblings.

Very important that those denied an education should provide such for the next generation. The dumber the sheep, the easier the indoctrination.

Dang liberals! Can't accept a little child sex abuse! What's this world coming to?

Don't you worry. MKelly will enlighten the world as to how this is a big witch hunt on Christians. Molestation: Scmolestation. Those girls probably asked for it.

CNN International is discussing this situation right now, not sure if it's also airing in the States at the same time .. they're really politicising the topic, I think that's completely misguided .. I do not think this is about conservatives vs liberals at all .. it's actually a rather weird framework for discussion IMO.

I agree. I hate when things like this come up and people start colluding the subject with broader ways to divide and make it about other things. Politics has nothing to do with this other than it seemed to be the stumbling block in Jimbob's run for office when it was made known.

I agree, but for the fact that supporters like Huckabee are, in fact, politicians.

This is where the lines are often blurred. But you are right, this is about the violation of children and children do not vote. This should invoke alarm no matter how one votes. Child molestation is sick and criminal no matter who the perp is.

The politicization is due to the Duggars having inserted themselves into politics and the right wing courting their favor so as to appeal to conservatives. I read somewhere, possibly even on this thread, that every Republican presidential candidate has been photographed with Josh Duggar.

Moreover, the Duggars inserted themselves into politics with that robocall, and Josh's former employer the Family Research Council, states in its mission statement that it intends to influence policy:

"Family Research Council's mission is to advance faith, family and freedom in public policy and the culture from a Christian worldview."

So IMO it never would have become political if the Duggars had stayed out of politics.

There are several reasons why this is being politicized, and none of them are valid.

First, and most significantly, many right wing evangelical Christians believe that MSM is biased against them, and that liberals seek to persecute them.
Second, Jim Bob was a Republican politician, and Josh worked for a particularly loathsome 'think-tank'/lobbying group/hate group that has almost exclusively right wing/conservative support.
Third, several Republican politicians have weighed in on this issue.
Finally, the media recognizes that if you can polarize an issue, it will inflame more passion and so garner more website hits/tv viewers. Fox is by far the most guilty of doing this.

The conservatives who are considering this as persecution are a very small but very vocal segment of those who identify as conservative.

eta -- I forgot about Michelle Duggar's dishonest, political, and hateful robocall message -- it actually set the wheels in motion for the revelations.

And providing much of the education of and childcare for their younger siblings.

And everything else too. From the Duggar Family web site:

In the Duggar household, chores are called "jurisdictions." For years, Jim Bob and Michelle have used the buddy system; the older children are each paired with a younger sibling, whom they mentor and assist with housework and schoolwork.
...
When it comes to jurisdictions, Jill is the family secretary. Jessa is the family organizer and administers the kids' school assignments. The older boys are in charge of the yard and fireplace. The girls make lunch and supper, and everyone helps clean up. Other jurisdictions include maintaining the kitchen, clothes' closet, upstairs hallway, living room, dining room, and playroom. One of the little tikes is in charge of rounding up the laundry, and another is responsible for emptying the various garbage bins throughout the house and disposing of the trash in the dumpster outside.

How do the younger Duggars stay on task throughout the day? They wear checklists that pin to their clothes.

But then why do so many of the so called "christians" get into politics? They do it so they can try and pass laws or prevent laws from being passed according to their so called religious beliefs.

What don't they get about separation from church and state? You can practice you religion in your home and at church but that is not good enough for so many, even though that is what our country is based on.

They are "called" to spread the word to others so they can "save" others from thinking differently from what they think.

IMO...they need a island of their own and they need to quit putting on false pretense to get votes that result in being put into a position where they have a say on the laws.

Sorry...of topic..but not off topic...considering this family has dappled in politics and spread false information to try and gain support for those in political positions.

Lies..lies...lies...I don't like lies and things that are fake.

See this bothers me. So Christians should just not do anything to try and serve the world? Why are all Christians lumped together. To be a Christian is not to be someone perfect or without blemish or flaws.. IT is a person that loves God and wants to serve him in their life. I believe that everyone should be able to do anything. I would never pick a group and say.. all ______ should not be politicians or cops, or judges or anything. Because that is prejudice. Judge each person on THEIR merits. Not a group as a whole.
People make mistakes. ( not talking about Josh here) but in general. I get so irritated when people start lumping all Christians in one group with some who may be louder and meaner than others. JMO

BBM for focus.

And then when those who do not want to be governed on the basis of religious beliefs they do not share resist, the Christians (some, I mean, not all) claim that there is a war on Christianity, or as Montjoy said, they are being persecuted by the liberal media, or some such.

So if that's the line the Duggars take on this, it will truly be sickening to me. But not surprising.

IMO the Christians you are talking about who give the others a bad name are not motivated to "serve the world" as much as they want to force others to follow their beliefs.

And tell others (gays, transgenders, the unsaved, etc.) how inferior they are, to put it mildly.

I agree with you completely, those types give Christianity as a whole a bad name. Because they are the ones flaunting their religion pridefully--and often spewing hate in its name--in public. While the other Christians are quietly living their lives according to their beliefs and allowing non-Christians to do the same.

Stepping off soapbox now.

Why would that bother you? People can do good deeds all day long. I don't want someone knocking on my door everyday trying to convert or "save" me according to their religious beliefs. This is America. Practice what you want in your home and your church but leave me alone to do the same. This is what our country is based on.

Again...leave it in your home and/or your church but don't try and change laws based on your religious beliefs. That is why there is and always will be mass murder and war in other countries.

I don't think that it is Christianity that the public or media are responding to here. Rather, it's sanctimony and hypocrisy.

I have to wonder just how much and in what detail JBD and MD really let out side of their little circle. I just can't see those daughters who are married, husbands thinking what happened to their wives as ok. I also wonder just how much Anna really knew before the wedding or better yet what her parents knew.

This disgusts me so much and to think that Josh designed Jessa and Ben's wedding invites makes me almost physically sick.

Gah!!

Well, yes, of course, but hypocrisy is preaching one thing and doing another and the Duggars have been preaching Christianity and doing something else. So the two are very much intertwined.
