Just found this thread....
I had heard of the Duggars before this, but knew zero about them or blanket parenting or "biblical parenting" or the incredibly bizarre and damaging notions that pass for education in their sect .
Wow. BTW, I recommend the site --homeschoolers anonymous for anyone interested in hearing from kids who survived the experience.
From what I've read, the Duggars may well be right that what Josh did to his sisters is mild compared to what other same-sect brothers have done to their sisters. How convenient for them- and how hypocritical --to acknowledge how twisted and damaging their style of parenting is, but for others only.
I don't think it's any accident that Josh chose to molest his 5 year old sister after he had molested the others, and I doubt his choice had anything to do with being more physically attracted by a baby.
Based on what I've read, I think he chose the 5 year old because he could exercise maximum control over her. She - and all her sisters --had been taught from birth and by example that girls exist solely to please men and to have babies, and that it was a punishable sin to not be happy about their place, much less to resist their reality, even in thought, the privacy of which is not allowed.
A five year old girl in that family would be most vulnerable because she wouldn't be old enough to fight back at any level, not even in thought.
That the Duggars don't feel any empathy for their daughters is completely unsurprising, given their beliefs. What reveals them as rank liars and hypocrites, though, is their minimization of their son's crimes.
If they parented according to what they say they believe, they wouldn't have dismissed what he did. There he was, confessing to being the dirty , sinful, deeply flawed child they believe all children to be.
Either they punished him and punished him severely each time, hoping to "break" him for his terrible sins, or they didn't punish him, because regardless of what is taught, in practice they believe only girls and women need and deserve to be broken, and any which way will do.
