Hof puts forward his ideas regarding the results of molestation which, in his opinon, might result in a victim becoming part of the prostitution industry. At first I thought he was exaggerating the likelihood of such a connection. So, I did a little checking and found out that Hof may indeed know what he is talking about (and as a brothel owner/operator he should know a lot about this first hand, I guess.) A couple of academic sources follow.

I'm not surprised at all.

Understands family. Yup. Bow to the male. Except for the Burqa and the extremes such as stoning, the concepts are the same re the treatment of women. They are creatures who are just objects for sex.

"And so that's really the point, is that we love everybody, no matter what background, no matter what their beliefs are," said Jim Bob. "And of course, not everybody is as tolerant towards us as we are of them, but that's part of life."

Okay, so that robocall was tolerance.

I must have misunderstood tolerance.

I guess we are considered the "small" group that is creating the "fuss"! I am blown away by the hypocrisy, the egos, the sense of entitlement of the Duggar parents. I am not excusing JD's behavior at all as his sisters have paid a huge price. IIRC, isn't there some scripture that says "Blessed are the meek"? I guess JBD tore that page out. IMO

  • #425
Nah, it is an important passage, it's just applied selectively. I'm sure the kids still need to be meek when daddy says so.

Kind of o/t. Prostitution is not a victimless crime. People who view 🤬🤬🤬🤬, strippers, or go to prostitutes are helping to continue the abuse. This pastor has done a lot to address the issue. He thinks kids should be taught to make decisions at a young age. http://bismarcktribune.com/news/loc...cle_9e09298e-dc0e-11e1-bf71-001a4bcf887a.html

I first heard about The Gift of Fear on one of Oprah's show. It was a very strong interview.

And servants who adore their master and agree with his every pronouncement as they look after the little things like childcare, basic healthcare, housekeeping, gardening, food storage and preparation, community relations, education, household repairs, family accounting, warning men about scarlet women ready to defraud their fragile male sensibilities by using a safe word like Nike.

I love The Gift of Fear.
I think everyone should read it.
I haven't decided when to have my kids read it... but I will.
I think it's a bit better than his other books. :twocents:

His book "Protecting the Gift" is specifically aimed at kids and teens.

Really? I did not know that.

Independent baptists. Not even the southern baptists would condone their lifestyle. (Daughter and sister of southern baptist ministers)

Many years ago I met my first independent Baptist in SW MO -- but he was a lucky, first born son, of a relatively small family, and he was at the baseball school where I worked. Not a bad guy, but in retrospect I guess I'm glad he didn't have a sister. Perhaps I'm just over-protective, but he did seem a bit hostile to some of the guys who were friendly with the few women who worked there. Mind you, after a conversation in our cabin, in which I revealed my religion, and said that I really didn't follow it, I seemed to have a free-pass with respect to moral issues. This was so many years ago, and it's never made sense to me.

I know, I have them both. I think The Gift of Fear is better than Protecting The Gift.

Well, what do you think of them, and if either is good, how so?

I think The Gift of Fear is more to the point... I guess would be the way I would word it?
I read it without an issue finishing it, I wanted to continue reading it.

Protecting The Gift was a bit boring in comparison. (Possibly since I had already read the other?)
I remember the first time I read them both thinking that I would have my kids read The Gift of Fear. :twocents:

I recommend The Gift of Fear to EVERYONE. I love it. :seeya:

Seriously o/t, but are we talking about the only SW MO baseball school I know about, the Mickey Owens Baseball Camp?

OK, back on/t.

Yes sir -- so far as I know, I was the only Manitoban to serve there -- I guess for 2 years as a counselor. And I did it while Mickey was still alive. Goodness, were you there? MOBS in Miller has shut down.

The fellah that many know as Charlie Sheen matriculated there, so many years ago -- along with many professional players. I had no illusions about being a pro, and I had academic scholarships in hand, but I just wanted more games and more competition. My first year was rough, but it was educational.

eta-- Sorry, this is all OT. My fault.

After reading more about the Duggar cult rules and beliefs, and the "eyetraps" and other articles, I was reminded of a description of Susan Sarandon's portrayal of Sr. Helen Prejean in Dead Man Walking by the late Roger Ebert.

Sister Helen, as played here by Sarandon and written and directed by Tim Robbins (from the memoir by the real Helen Prejean), is one of the few truly spiritual characters I have seen in the movies. Movies about "religion" are often only that - movies about secular organizations that deal in spirituality. It is so rare to find a movie character who truly does try to live according to the teachings of Jesus (or anyone else, for that matter) that it's a little disorienting: This character will behave according to what she thinks is right, not according to the needs of a plot, the requirements of a formula, or the pieties of those for whom religion, good grooming, polite manners and prosperity are all more or less the same thing.[/QUOTE]

From what I've been reading and watching lately, the Duggars, as they fight to hold onto their lucrative TLC show, have no qualms about judging others as unworthy (without ever taking the time to actually hear the opinions or the beliefs of those whom they judge). IMO, this is because, in addition to following a code of female subservience and an obsession with sexuality, they appear to be among "those for whom religion, good grooming, polite manners and prosperity are all more or less the same thing."

Never attended, but the catcher on our team did -- several mid- to late-'60s years.
