Arrest Made - Dustin Kjersem, 35, killed while camping, 911 caller thought bear attack, sheriff says murder, Oct. 12, 2024

That is a good question. It looks like the lead on this has been the sheriff of Gallatin county, and I know that there is latitude on who charges in unincorporated areas. I am going to guess that they will defer to a local jurisdiction.
I was thinking the same thing. I believe gun carrying in the National Forest defers to the laws of the state the National Forest is in. I was wondering about this specifically after going through the list of inmates and seeing someone being held for the Federal Marshal's Service.

Darren Abbey. I’m not seeing him on the inmate roster, but I swear I saw him when I checked earlier.

Here's something about him going back to 2012

The first came one night last July, when [snipped name]walked into a Bayview, Idaho, bar only to find himself almost immediately confronted by neo-Nazi skinhead Daren Christopher Abbey.

And he's apparently an identical twin...

There was debate over identification since Daren Abbey’s brother, who witnesses say was a twin, was there as well.

Witnesses used white power tattoos and footwear to distinguish the two men.

His picture is in this news article -
they found him by the DNA he left on a beer can in the tent..
Suspect is Daren Abbey
He confessed too.

According to Silver Bow inmate records he was arrested on Oct 26.

Lots (and lots) more on his history here following the 2012 incident.

More racist incidents (including in jail and even assault against jail staff) and the sentencing and his drug history, etc.

Wow. So sad. Twin brothers? Interesting. I wonder what the rest of the story is here.

I hope he spends the rest of life behind bars this guy is walking rage machine imo.
Since his DNA was on a beer can in the tent I wonder if they were hanging that night maybe work buddies? and so it wasn't so random...

Just thinking out loud...

Yes. If Abbey was in the construction business, that could well be the case... work associates hanging together.

Until something went terribly wrong. That is really the mystery now... the why? What triggered the rage to emerge?

OMG, his poor girlfriend. Dustin was supposed to meet her Friday night, but he never showed up. She and a friend found him dead the next day.

I just can't imagine arriving on this horrific scene and knowing the victim, let alone being in a romantic relationship with him.

Your article also answered my questions and for everyone else.

"Sheriff Springer said the homicide appears to be a chance encounter with no prior connection between Abbey and Kjersem."

"Abbey reportedly said in his confession that he had planned to camp on Thursday, Oct. 10 at the site where he encountered Dustin, already set up."

According to Sheriff Springer, "Abbey said in his confession that Dustin welcomed him to the campsite and offered him a beer."

“At some point, this individual struck Dustin Kjersem with a piece of solid wood, stabbed him in the neck with a screwdriver, and ultimately hit him with the axe,” Springer said.

Just wow :(

Horrific! And Dustin was just being friendly.

They arrested him very quickly. Dustin's body was found on the 12th. Fourteen days later, they arrested him after testing DNA on a beer can. Of course, his DNA was probably in the system because of his conviction in the 2012 case mentioned above.

And he killed Dustin because he had planned to camp in the site where Dustin was set up. I think someone posted earlier wondering if this was what happened...

I wonder if Bozeman PD will possibly find a link between Abbey and Steve Killwein? Re open that case again.

Abbey doesn't seem to be the sharpest crayon in the box.
