Mackenzie Anderson (21) was stabbed to death by her ex boyfriend, Tyrone Thompson (22) on Friday the 25th of March.

The 21 year old from Newcastle posted videos about domestic violence and her injuries caused by her ex partner on her public tiktok account.

Tyrone was arrested in October 2021, charged and sentenced to 9 months for his assault on Mackenzie. He was released on parol after serving 4 months. Immediately after his arrest, he physically assulted his father, was arrested and released from jail.

Mackenzie had taken an AVO (order of protection) out on Tyrone. She moved suburbs, she expressed her fear to friends. When Tyrone was released from jail in early March, she contacted the police as soon as he started harassing her again.

Nothing was done to protect this young mother. On Friday, the 25th of March, at 10:40pm. Mackenzie phoned the police in a panic, stating that Tyrone was breaking into her house.

When the police arrived, they found Mackenzie outside of her unit with Tyrone crouching over her. Mackenzie had been brutally stabbed 20 times, she died minutes after help arrived.

The police located her 18 month old son, inside, hiding in a cupboard, covered in his mother's blood. Tyrone has been arrested.

This is a horrific crime that could have been prevented. My heart aches for Mackenzie and her poor baby boy.

Absolutely abhorrent. This keeps on happening. It’s not some stranger attack, hard to pin down. It’s someone whose whereabouts is often known. I’ve seen up close the police’s lax attitude in case likes this, it’s incredibly concerning.

Battle to add years onto domestic violence murderer’s jail time

“Authorities are fighting to have time added onto the “inadequate” jail sentence handed to a man who murdered his former partner by stabbing her over 70 times.

A Newcastle man who murdered his former partner when he stabbed her at least 78 times just weeks after being released from jail for domestic violence offences against her should have time added onto his sentence, prosecutors have told a court.

Thompson pleaded guilty to her murder and was sentenced to a maximum of 22 years and six months.

He will be eligible for release on parole in March 2038 after serving 15 and a half years.

The Crown has appealed against the leniency of Thompson’s sentence and has taken its fight to have time added onto his sentence to the state’s highest court, the Court of Criminal Appeal.

An autopsy found she suffered at least 78 stab wounds to her head, neck, back, chest, abdomen, legs and arms.

The hearing continues.”

Appeal against sentence for domestic violence murderer Tyrone Thompson fails

In short:

“The Crown has lost an appeal against a jail sentence handed down to Tyrone Thompson.

Three judges in the Court of Criminal Appeal ruled that the 15-year sentence was "within the range of recent sentences".

What's next?

Mackenzie Anderson's mother says the fight is not over.”
