Six to eight weeks ago, local women were out walking about 8am when they saw an elderly male walking towards the highway and across the railway line,' Detective Superintendent Des Bray said.

'They didn't recognise this person as a local and they haven't seen him since. That person was about 60 years of age, average height, lightly built and neatly dressed and cleaned cut.

'We have no description of the clothes he was wearing but he was carrying a dark-coloured suitcase in one hand and he was carrying as supposed to wheeling it.

'The people who saw him thought it was odd because he didn't engage with them and most of the locals would chat to one another - even people they don't know,' he continued.

'They have then spoken to other people in Wynarka and another person had seen the person. When they returned to the corner, they couldn't see him.

'So they don't know whether he was collected on the highway by somebody else or what happened. We would appeal to that person to make contact with police through Crime Stoppers

Murder investigation into child bones discovered at Wynarka, Murray Mallee

Det-Supt Bray said that although the identity of the child was unknown, parts of the investigation were progressing “quite well”. He said that there was no suggestion the remains were those of missing NSW boy, William Tyrell.

Det-Supt stressed William was one of many missing children cases in Australia that were being examined by his detectives for possible leads.

Does anyone know anything about the town Tailem Bend? I seen on Twitter someone mentioned the remains being found just outside Tailem Bend

Nothing relevant although it is a common rest spot when driving to Adelaide (from Melbourne or any of the smaller SA towns to the east of Adelaide). There is (or used to be at least) quite a nice large truck/service stop there on the highway that has pretty good food.

BBM. Interesting. IMO the person who dumped the suitcase would've had to have transport of some description. Unless he was also seen on foot later in the day, or the days following.

I was thinking of old cases too. Sadly there is a few of those in SA.

That's a pretty deliberate stack of rocks the police officer walks by. Do you think this was as a marker for the location (made by whom, or for whom)? Having a look on Google maps... does anyone know which direction out of town the remains were found?

One had dragged the suitcase from the bushes where police had originally believed it dumped and placed it in full sight on the verge.

Why would anybody go to the trouble of doing that? Especially right next to the highway where it could be a danger.

Others had opened the suitcase, some had even "poked around ... not realising the importance of what was inside".

If that many people had not only seen it but rummaged through it (WT??)

That is just too strange. If the police are finding so many people that are admitting to having looked at the suitcase then how many looked in it, realised what it may be and quickly put it back wanting nothing to do with the suitcase/get involved?

Yes, this is what I'm thinking too. Probably in shock (understandable), not wanting to become involved for fear of becoming suspect, but then has second thoughts and comes forward. I can understand this reaction, pretty natural I'd say.

The remains might have been wrapped in an old towel or something which would be in a horrific state.
Maybe an older person doubted themselves and couldn't believe what they thought they saw or smelled and had to tell their spouse.

I would hesitate calling the police if I thought it might have been animal remains especially if ligatures were wrapped around it.

It's extremely strange for someone on foot to carry a suitcase from a town and then into the scrub.
Was he hitchhiking and couldn't get a lift? Did he hide the bag thinking he'd come back at a later time?

It's really odd but murderers are odd.

How many old suitcases are sitting around on the side of the road especially around council pickup days & I've never given it a second thought.

Exactly. Maybe the locals are used to seeing dropped luggage and the like. That would explain why someone would pull it out from behind a bush - to make it more visible. It would also explain why several people stopped, looked at it, moved it and/or poked at it.

The pile of rocks is definitely a marker of some sort. No tape around it. Maybe the police made it. ??

9 news said investigators have ruled out a link to William, making me wonder if it is indeed a girl :(

I can't find any links to back this up, but I swear I heard it. Take with a few grains of salt. Maybe I missed the crucial word "haven't" or something.

If the bloke with a suitcase sighted 6-8 weeks is the person who left this suitcase here then I reckon (pure theory/speculation) he probably knows the area, but does not live there now, he was not recognised by the locals. He lives in an urban area but does not have a car, otherwise why not drive to a remote area and bury the case ? He may have caught a bus to this town and caught a bus out ?

  • #237
Anyone else find it a bit shocking that police say people have supposedly opened and moved the suitcase and 'had a poke around' and not reported it? I'd never have imagined that could happen.

Yes and no ... if you opened it and found a gross mess you might just close it up again without bothering about it. Like, you might stop to check it to look for some identification, say perhaps because you thought someone has had it fall of a trailer. Then when you look inside, by the nature of the contents you decide that it had been dumped on purpose.

I spotted a small pile of rocks stacked up by the roadside on google maps (image taken 2010), so perhaps it's a common thing to see in that area?

Stacks of stones like that are common in central australia. Probably in that area as well. I'd say not linked to the case. But not something I can talk about.

Maybe the people who clear fire trails stack them so they are not in the way of worker vehicles going through? Poor lil one whoever it turns out to be. May you rest in peace and get the proper burial you deserve.
