This is terrible! I hope everyone in harms way had plenty of nitice to evacuate.

I see a cyclone moves in a clockwise motion. Is that the difference between a huricane and a cyclone? Then what is a typhoon?

Scandi

PS: Great to see you Rocky!

Yes that is the difference between a hurricane and a cyclone. They are named typhoons in the Northern Hemisphere.

From what I've heard there has been a lot of property damage and uprooted trees and several reports of missing people this far. The rescue services have been flooded with calls but it is still too windy for them to venture out and rescue those in need.

Hi Solidarity, just noticed you were an Aussie too,..Im hearing much the same news as well, although an interview just done with the police up there reported that there were no confirmed reports of missing people, only the problem of phone lines being down and family in other regions not being able to contact their loved ones around the worst hit areas of the cyclone.

FAR north Queensland is still reeling after a category-five cyclone likened to an atomic bomb ripped through the area yesterday morning, damaging thousands of buildings and devastating crops.

Innisfail, south of Cairns, bore the brunt of Cyclone Larry's 290km/h winds as it tore roofs from buildings and flattened or uprooted trees.

Amazingly, no one was killed in the storm, but at least 30 people were injured.

A Counter Disaster and Rescue Service (CDRS) spokeswoman yesterday said authorities had received reports that at least 30 people had received minor injuries, including cuts and abrasions.

The Innisfail hospital sustained severe damage but no staff or patients were injured, she said. Hundreds of millions of dollars damage was inflicted as the category-five storm - the strongest possible - also destroyed most of Australia's banana crop and flattened sugar cane fields.

No loss of life thank goodness.evacuations worked great.
There is major damage to a lot of homes and it wiped out a lot of banana plantations and sugar cane crops .destroyed a small country town.

Here is a link to wunderground.com to Dr. Jeff Master's information on the storm. Looks like gusts up to 180mph. At its strongest it was a Cat 3 on our scale. He explains the Australian scale vs. the U.S. one. How amazing and miraculous that no deaths or injuries were reported. Hope they get back on their feet quickly.

Praying they get bypassed by Cyclone Wati - which seems to be changing its path now and going the other direction: http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/sp200618.html.
