Do the other 2 adults believe themselves, that Gus wandered off? Does Shannon actually believe Gus wandered off?

I think none of them believe Gus wandered off at this point. Perhaps for a short time initially one or more of the other adults believed it.

There is an implication that we know who the suspect is. We don’t and I don’t think the answer to that question is obvious as it depends what actually happened - which we can only guess at and suggest various possibilities.
