I don't take stoic to mean a person has no feelings.
I take it to mean like someone said to be brave no matter what may happen. To face it anyway.

It generally means someone who doesn't let emotion rule and can see the world through a lens of logic .they are not emotionless , Queen Elizabeth II was deemed to be a stoic,
They are generally good at maintaining a good poker face during a game of cards

I'm surprised the dogs living at the property didn't track the boy's scent
Were they trained scent dogs?
If not, that's why they didn't.

Something that keeps coming back to me how sound travels in remote flat areas. I have spent time in similar locations and grew up in the country. We could hear the neighbours kids who lived 100s of meters away playing. In the outback with no road/ambient noise it is even easier to hear people. We were taught to koo-ee at a young age and to return a koo-ee if we heard one. Was Gus nonverbal or already incapacitated in the first few hours of being lost? I can’t shake the idea that he couldn’t have gotten out of a ‘koo-ee’ range during that first 30 minutes of being misplaced, and I find it hard to fathom that a potentially crying child couldn’t be heard in the vast stillness.

I know we've concentrated on one pile of sand since Gus went missing and although this will probably be of no significance now, in this vid, the Journo says he was playing in "the pile of red sand". ....
At 0:50 there's 2nd pile of sand in the footage, which looks to be outside a separate dwelling.

I've pondered a scream by whoever was looking for him, you know, yellin' out his name. That's the first thing I'd do, I'd be yelling GUS!!! GUSSSSS!!!
So, I did a little research on how far a voice can travel. The results are mixed, being affected by various things.
A half hour to travel, for a 4 year old. Maybe a bit longer. Was he that far away he couldn't hear someone yelling his name? Or vice versa, they couldn't hear him?
Or had something happened otherwise?
I mean, a 4 year old would have to have a purpose to straight line walk for a half hour, straightaway from his homestead. I'm likely wrong, but I don't see it happening.
I've also researched how far a 4 year old can travel in a half hour, and those estimates are mixed. My personal estimate is if he'd walked continuously at a decent clip he'd likely have covered a distance of at least 1.5 kilometers. But what's the likelihood he'd walk continuously, and in a straight line?
I think he's close to home....or suffered something other than simply walking off in to the bush.

They have to be extensively trained as scent dogs to be able to track.

You also need to take into account the direction and speed of any wind at the time as a wind blowing in the wrong direction could carry a call away from Gus. On the other hand, it's common for winds to drop around both dusk and dawn, as the prevailing weather switches between daytime and nighttime temperatures and conditions, and pick up again later, maybe in blowing a different direction. You often see this on coasts with onshore winds becoming offshore winds or vice versa.

This is maybe a stupid theory, but I can only think of one way a kid could walk straight for any reasonable period of time - if they are trying to find where the sun is going to hide and walking towards it.
Even as an adult, I have indeed tried to chase the location where rainbows are coming out of. Unsuccessful so far but I haven't lost hope
I don't think the boy is out there in the open.
IMO
he is either stuck somewhere in the yard's outbuildings/machinery/the house itself
or
hidden far away as a result of fatal accident cover up or foul play.
(I'm not pointing at anybody particular,
this is just my general assumption)

Also possible! But unfortunately doesn't help us figure out which direction he would go in that case.. Perhaps he would follow a road.
If he did go looking for the sun hiding place, as it was close to sunset, then that would mean a straight line to the west (depending on time of year)
This all of course assuming he did wander off, which is also not given.
